I am currently working on a short-term contract as a Waste Education and Engagement Officer on Rottnest Island to engage both businesses and visitors to the Island and promote correct waste practices and sustainability. This role involves collaboration with local businesses, development and implementation of educational campaigns, regular reporting, budgeting and liaising with stakeholders, organising and facilitating meetings with businesses through a Waste Management Working Group (developed for this project), bin tagging, bin audits, data collection and data analysis.

As a tour guide and educator for primary school groups, I was responsible for the delivery of engaging and educational activities. These activities included role playing, educational presentations, interactive sessions and leading school groups through Royal National Park. The students came from diverse backgrounds including English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). Positive outcomes in this role depended on creative communication approaches and my friendly outgoing disposition.

This was a dual role that involved running my own business and tutoring primary and secondary school students. I was motivated to provide additional educational resources to those in need. Some of my students have learning difficulties which affect their ability to read, write or engage with their school work. In addition to the logistics of running a small business, the teaching aspects of this role required me to be reliable, enthusiastic, patient, resourceful and employ a range of teaching strategies to suit the needs of individual students.

This role involved working alongside and managing 75 volunteers of diverse age, background and ability. This included factoring in physical and mental health issues, for example, anaphylaxis risk management or mental health factors. In addition to employing my communication, management and organisational skills, I gained a lot of experience in conflict resolution. I was also required to produce risk assessments and fulfil OH&S requirements and I acted as the primary first aid contact for all volunteers on duty in the National Park. My role as Project Manager also involved training new volunteers in each biannual intake. The training program was comprised of multiple training sessions over a two month period that focused on equipping future volunteers with enough knowledge to function as Interpreters for visitors in the Nature Reserve. These sessions included teaching emergency and communicative radio protocols, basic first aid concepts, informative sessions about biodiversity and local flora and fauna, local history, public speaking and communication skills. I functioned as a facilitator or a leader depending on my expertise in each area.
