Afforded the absolute privilege of spending my Community Service year in the laboratory, working in Haematopathology with overtime in Clinical Haematology.Laboratory Haematology Involvement:• Passed the registrar’s peripheral blood morphology and basic coagulation competency assessment with distinction • Reported on numerous bone marrow biopsies, peripheral blood films and basic coagulation parameters • Presented at Morphology Meetings• Presented as part of the scheduled haematopathology registrar training programme• Co-ordinated Journal Club • Introduced a new online bone marrow biopsy booking systemClinical Haematology Involvement:• Management of patients in the outpatient clinic• Managed patients with common Haematological emergencies (including neutropenic sepsis, tumour lysis syndrome and superior vena cava obstruction)• Admission and initiation of the work-up for newly diagnosed acute leukaemias and lymphomas, TTP, ITP and various other benign and malignant Haematological conditions relevant to a tertiary centre• Consulted on patients referred to Clinical Haematology telephonically or via VULA under the guidance of the fellow and consultant in chargeGeneral Academic involvement:Attended ward rounds, Journal Club presentations, ECHO presentations, formal medical registrar academic teaching, morphology presentations and Haematology DeepDive.Research:Under the guidance of the Haematopathology consultants, I am currently working on a case report on acute myeloid leukaemia with t(8;21) and systemic mastocytosis in paediatric patients.

Worked at a district level hospital, with overtime in the emergency centre. Gained valuable clinical experience in:• Managing common paediatric conditions• Neonatal care• Performing caesarean sections and managing a maternity obstetric unit• Investigation and management of common internal medicine conditions• Diagnosis and management of common orthopaedic conditions with valuable time spent in theatre• Investigation and management of common psychiatric conditions • Approach to common surgical presentations, wound care and basic surgical technique• Management of patients in the general outpatient department setting • Granted autonomous practice of anaesthesia after hours for emergency proceduresTraining was overseen by family medicine specialists, established medical officers and family medicine registrars.
