In parallel, achitecture has always been 'in the blood' - his passion in design led him to study (each of three) bachelor degrees at the University of Melbourne, in Planning and Design, Property and Construction, and Architecture (with honours). And later as an alumni, through a teaching role at the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), where he articulated the importance of design fundamentals through critical thinking - fundamentally driven by risk. Pursuing his passion in the 'processes' of architecture and construction, he augmented his local work while living abroad, working in the Netherlands on a range of 'mixed-use' projects and later for several years as a pharmaceutical architect in the United States. He always seeks to add value, driving unquestionably good design into facilities (for the future) to support sustainability, health and wellbeing. As both a registered builder and a registered architect, and through a unique and diverse project history, his approach is invariably one that is driven by function - using a "hands-on" approach that brings about inherent creativity through the "design from first principles". He describes architecture as somewhere on a spectrum between "art and science", somewhere between:Richard Meier’s “tangible” and “intangible”;John Ruskin’s “useful” and “useless”; Steven Holl’s “real” and “abstract”;William Morris’ “useful” and “beautiful”; and perhaps evenHall and Oates’ “manic moves and drowsy dreams…… living in the middle between the two extremes...” 😉He is further driven by the the engagement within multi-disciplinary practice and fostering relationships between design and construction professionals. To date, he has over 25 years' experience in the documentation and administration of a range of pharmaceutical, hospital, sterile and non-sterile manufacturing facilities - locally and internationally - including (but not limited to) physical containment laboratories, pandemic response and animal health, radiopharmaceutical and vaccine production facilities. Primarily, he is a solutions-driven professional, driven by the most challenging of (your) situations and supported globally by a unique wealth of Subject Matter Experts within PharmOut.PharmOut.
