Nienke De Graeff Email and Phone Number
Working at the interface of ethics and biomedicine, I am fascinated by the ethics of emerging biological & biomedical technologies. As an assistant professor at the department of Ethics & Law of the LUMC, I conduct and supervise research on the ethical questions related to embryo models, stem cells, genetic modification, and regenerative medicine. Previously, I conducted post doctoral research that centered around unraveling arguments about (un)naturalness in discussions on genetic modification. In my PhD research at the department of Medical Humanities (now: Bioethics & Health Humanities) of the UMC Utrecht, I focused on the ethical analysis of gene drives, a technology that promotes the progressive spread of genomic alterations throughout a target species. Next to my research, I am passionate about societal outreach and impacting policy. Amongst others, I am a member of committees such as the Young Academy Leiden, the Netherlands Committee on Genetic Modification (COGEM), and the ethics commitee of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). I have also taught medical ethics, medical humanities, and philosophy of science to (bio)medical students.
