My research uses both basic and applied research to advance our understanding of mosquito evolution, species’ distributions and their role in mosquito-borne disease. Through extensive collaborative links into the field, I integrate traditional entomological procedures with molecular genetics and informatics-based technologies to deliver novel insights and tools for vector biology and ecology. Outcomes answer fundamental questions about which mosquito species transmit disease pathogens, where they exist, why they are there and how their populations connect and move. Research outcomes also address questions relating to the possible impacts and risks relating to climate change and mosquito-borne disease – work which is becoming increasingly significant in terms of regional biosecurity and public health. My main areas of research span malaria vectors and endemic and exotic arbovirus vectors including dengue, Japanese encephalitis and chikungunya.

Associate ProfessorUniversity Of Queensland Apr 2008 - PresentBrisbane, AustraliaI teach into a variety of first- and third-year subjects including 1st year Genes, Cells and Evolution and Arthropods and Human Health. In 2011, I designed and still run the third-year course "Climate Change Biology", becoming more poignant each year it is taught. I supervise post-graduate research from Honours through to PhDs and my lab collaborates with domestic and international stakeholders including the Australian Defence Force, Australian state health departments and wide range of International research institutions. -
Research ScientistCsiro Apr 2008 - PresentBrisbane, AustraliaAs an integral part of the Health and Biosecurity Unit at CSIRO, my research portfolio addresses biosecurity issues of national and regional significance - particularly the threat of invasive mosquitoes, pathogens and vector-borne disease. This creates an exciting nexus between the unique capacity of CSIRO and the stakeholders with whom I work in this area. Novel mosquito control technologies are now unfolding with successful incomparable/sterile male mosquito releases in North Queensland executed in 2018 suppressing urban populations of the dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti. -
Senior Research FellowUniversity Of Technology, Sydney 1996 - 2007I occupied a number of post-doctoral positions at UTS between 1996-2007 - the last ten years of which were self-funded through various competitive fellowships. This decade of work cemented my momentum in the field of vector biology and regional problems with mosquito-borne disease.
