About Nigel Bushrod
I am a Chartered Measurement and Control Technologist and Fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control; a specialist Instrumentation & Control Engineer with 43 years ExxonMobil experience. My career started in 1980 as an Apprentice. I studied Industrial Measurement and Control at Bournemouth followed by Electronic Engineering at Southampton. In 1989 I was promoted to Control Applications Engineer and then in 1990 I took a step-out assignment to develop, document and implement Operation Integrity Management Practices to ISO9000/1. In 1992 I was promoted to Instrumentation & Control Engineer and in 1996 to ExxonMobil Chemical Lead Engineer. Following the formation of the Refinery & Chemicals shared Engineering Services Division, I was promoted to ExxonMobil Fawley Site Lead in 2004. After 8 years leading the synergy site engineering team, in 2012 I moved to ExxonMobil Engineering Europe Ltd with regional responsibility for all Europe and Middle East downstream sites and Engineering Surveillance QA for Global Projects. I was a member of the ExxonMobil Global Engineering Network for 24 years and was Coordinator for 6 years from 2009 to 2015. In 2017 I was assigned full time to the Fawley Strategy Project (more than $1 billion investment in the UK) as the Process Control Lead for early project development (Apr 2017 to Apr 2018), followed by FEED (Apr 2018 to Apr 2019), and client Engineering Support & Surveillance for EPC (Apr 2019 to Dec 2020). Throughout this period, I worked at the Fluor Offices in Farnborough and New Delhi. I am currently working design follow-up as a Project Engineer as part of the NEC4 Alliance Construction Contract. I have been a member of the Wessex Section of the Institute of Measurement & Control for 32 years, including the Chairman for 5 years from 2006 to 2011; I am currently Honorary Secretary. I support the InstMC with Professional Mentoring & Engineering Competence assessments to UK-SPEC. I was honoured to be elected onto the InstMC Council in 2021. I have also served as a School Governor and Chair of Governors. CurrentIn 2017 I was assigned full time to the Fawley Strategy (FAST) Project, in total more than $1 billion investment in the UK. I was the Process Control Lead for early project development (April 2017 to April 2018) followed by FEED (April 2018 to April 2019). In April 2019 I was assigned to the ExxonMobil Global Projects Company to complete the client Engineering Support & Surveillance for the EPC working at the Fluor Offices in Farnborough and New Delhi. During 2020 I worked on the Factory Acceptance Testing for the HIMA (Germany) Protective System including the Integrated Machinery Control and Protection System for the large Reciprocating Compressors, Centrifugal Compressor and the feed pumps, followed by the Compressor Performance Testing at the Baker Hughes GE module construction yards in Italy. Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer
In 1996 I became Lead Engineer for the Chemical site, with discipline responsibility for technology, standards and networking. This included supervising and reviewing work completed by Engineering Contractors on projects. I became a member of the World-wide Instrumentation Network with annual meetings alternating between Europe and North America and frequent work groups. In 1998 a new shared Esso Petroleum & Exxon Chemical Site Engineering Technology Division was formed combining Engineers from the two companies. This provided an opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and experience across the whole site. I joined a team of 10 Instrumentation and Control Engineers but retained the position of Lead Engineer for Exxon Chemical Company. I was nominated chairman of an international work group tasked with developing a methodology to optimise critical instrument test intervals.In 1999 the new Exxon Mobil Corporation was formed. The large world-wide engineering organisation enabled me to broaden my knowledge and experience through participation in networks and work groups. At Fawley I had the lead role in the development of standards and other common site-wide activities, for example development of the HSE COMAH Report.The escalation of intranet-based networking also provided opportunities for me to participate and grow within a wider community. The ExxonMobil Global Engineering Organisation has a comprehensive Knowledge Based System for the sharing of information and open discussion. Specialists are connected from every site world-wide creating a large Instrumentation Community of Practice with over 400 users. The Global Instrumentation Network provides a key role in stewarding the system. I regularly contribute and participate in these interactive discussions.In February 2004 I was promoted to ExxonMobil Refinery and Chemical Site Lead Instrumentation and Control Engineer. In August 1990 I took an assignment to develop, document and implement Safety Management Practices and Systems to ISO9000/1. The work was driven by a corporate initiative in safety and risk management. This was an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and skills in all aspects of management, engineering and production.
