As Managing Director of McCarthy Inter Africa Ltd and having developed international business relationships for over 25 years my skill set includes:• Getting things done with people – the essential function of management.• Understanding the numbers – and then being able to interpret them.• Commercial experience – there is very little new under the sun, it’s just that you need to have been out it for a while to be able to see clearly.• Knowing the value of relationships – bits of paper with signatures give some comfort, but you have to be able to “know” that people can deliver and have your best interests at heart as part of their need to protect what they care for.• Knowing the secret of good investment – investing in processes or things is not as important in knowing who to invest in.• Communicating with more than just emails – if you can’t say what you want and make yourself understood, then you will fail.• Creating credibility – it starts with a handshake and a smile, but soon you have to be able to deliver what you say and do what you promise.• Knowing when to say no – it’s easy to say yes all the time, but that’s not how to run a successful business.• Having fun at work – everyday no matter how complicated, there is always the need to smile about something, and if you look for it you will find it.
