Outside of CPL, Nigel has a long standing and keen interest in motor racing. His father first took him to Le Mans in 1969. The race was one of the most exciting in the event's history. Porsche had the World Sportscar Championship in the bag and were strong favourites to achieve their first outright win. With the mighty 917s in the lead for 90% of the race, disaster struck when Elford/Attwood car's gearbox broke. His father first took him to Le Mans in 1969. The race was one of the most exciting in the event's history. Porsche had the World Sportscar Championship in the bag and were strong favourites to achieve their first outright win. With the mighty 917s in the lead for 90% of the race, disaster struck when Elford/Attwood car's gearbox broke. The Ford of Ickx and Jackie Oliver that took over the lead and the race ended in a three-hour sprint, with Ford battling the pursuing Porsche 908 of Hans Herrmann and Gérard Larrousse non-stop. In the end, the Ford GT40 took the chequered flag by just 120 metres after 24 hours. Nigel has returned to Le Mans every year subsequently.That first race ignited his racing ambitions. He always liked going fast, practising on the road in his first car, a Ford Capri, before starting to race single-seaters on the track.Nigel has had a successful racing career from 1991 to present, winning races and podiums on many occasions and finishing Runner up in the Formula First Championship. He has raced (to name just a few) in the British Formula First Championship, Classic Group 1 Championship, British GT Championship, European Endurance Championship, European Le Mans series, Britcar Endurance Championship and most recently in the Citroen C1 Endurance Championship. Nigel considered an Engineering degree at University but when offered a hands-on role as a laser operator in Huntingdon, he chose the more practical option. A good decision which led to him quickly acquiring technical skills and realising that his strength lay in his interpersonal skills and ability to talk with both technical understanding and business acumen. He took on a sales development role and grew the business by more than £1m in the first year through the development of European sales.He then left this role to set up Hybrid Laser Tech, a specialist laser engineering company, which went from strength to strength and was eventually sold in 1994.Whilst running HLT, Nigel met Richard Hefford-Hobbs and they worked on a number of projects, developing a firm friendship and the commercial trust that led to the foundation of CPL.
