Nigel Strang graduated in Chemistry in 1982 from Sussex University, UK and worked in personal computers and information technology in the education sector in the 80s. In 1990 he joined Professor Jean-Pierre Boissel's Clinical Trials Department in Lyon France, working in pan European networking and data processing and then in research activities, being actively involved in setting up the French Cochrane Centre and obtaining his MSc and PhD in Medical Informatics. From 1998 to 2000 he was the Technical Director of HDMP France, (Smithkline Beecham) developing the medical record software, Health One.He joined the French state Biomedicine Agency in August 2000 and over six years led teams and projects transforming the organ transplant information system into a secure, internet based system. He then defined and procured information systems in the areas of assisted reproductive technology, embryo and stem cell research and human medical genetics specifically in vigilance.In 2009 Nigel joined the ICT for Health Unit of DG Infso at the European Commission where, beyond the evaluation, negotiation and monitoring of multi million euro research projects, he established a work programme on patient centred services.Nigel's main professional interest is in the role of patients in their healthcare. He is convinced that information technology can empower them as they try to cope with their health problems.Nigel is a grass roots technologist, software designer, project manager and information system architect in medical and clinical research applications. He is familiar with bioethics, methodology, evaluation and legislation. He is convinced that the success of projects arises from the quality of the human relationships built in and around the project teams and within the user community. He considers that creative design is the key to great products.Nigel is married, has two children and is based in Paris. He skis, cycles and teaches sailing.He is a dedicated European.
