About Nigel Tapper
Professor Nigel Tapper holds a Personal Chair in Environmental Science at Monash University where he leads the Climate Research Group within the Monash Weather and Climate Program. He is also a Program Leader in the CRC for WSC and an Associate Director of the Monash Water for Liveability Centre. Within the CRC Nigel's group undertakes fundamental work on heat, health and thermal comfort and on the performance of different elements of Water Sensitive Urban Design in improving urban climate to create more liveable cities, in the face of climate change. Nigel was also Chair of the National Committee for Geography of the Australian Academy of Science during the period of development of the Australian Curriculum.Evidence of Research Excellence (October 2014)• Chief Investigator/Key Researcher in proposals attracting ~$15 million in competitive research funding since 2006, including 5 Australian Research Council Discovery/Linkage Grants (DP0344744, DP0557416, DP0772180, DP130103562, LP100200218)• Member, last 2 rounds, Research Evaluation Committee (REC), Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), Australian Research Council.• Publishes in leading journals with impact factors >3 such as Science of the Total Environment, Remote Sensing of the Environment, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Global Change Biology and Atmospheric Environment. Much of this work is highly cited. His work has attracted 2640 citations (1580 since 2009) and his current h index is 26.• Twenty Invited Keynote Addresses since 2008• Currently supervising 15 PhD students

CurrentNigel Tapper holds a Personal Chair in Environmental Science (as a climate sciencespecialist) within the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at MonashUniversity where he currently leads the Applied Climate Research Group (~20 staffand graduate students) within the Monash Weather and Climate (MWAC) Program.Nigel is Co-Leader Program B (Water Sensitive Urbanism) and a key researcher inthe new Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, and is Director(Urban Climate) of the Monash Water for Liveability Centre. Outside MonashUniversity Nigel has contributed strongly to the work of the IPCC (as an ExpertReviewer and a Member of the Expert Panel on Infrastructure and Settlements) and tothe work of ICSU/IGU as the Chair of the National Committee for Geography of theAustralian Academy of Science. Since 2009 Nigel has served as a member of theResearch Evaluation Committee (Physics, Chemistry and Earth Science) of theAustralian national research evaluation organization, ERA (Excellence in Researchfor Australia)Nigel has published seven books, 11 book chapters and close to 200 refereed researchpublications, and has supervised 30 Ph.D. students, in an academic and researchcareer spanning 35 years. Nigel’s work has been cited more than 2700 times and hehas an h-index of 26. Nigel co-authored the classic text on Australasian climate – TheWeather and Climate of Australia and New Zealand. Key elements of his research inrecent years have been in the area of weather and climate impacts, including fire,ecosystem and human health-climate interactions. A strong climate changeadaptation theme has emerged in this research, especially in relation to urbanenvironments and human health. Nigel has a particularly strong track record ofdelivering industry-relevant research.
