I have over thirty years’ experience in the UK power industry, of which the last fifteen have been in energy trading, risk management and commercial management, having worked previously in a number of technical roles. As Commercial Manager at Barking Power, one of the UK’s largest Independent Power Projects, I was responsible for developing and implementing commercial and trading strategies during a period of significant market change, working with other members of the management team on plant optimisation, cost reduction and translating these into an actionable business plan. My last two development projects concerned potential conversion of Barking CCGT power station to open cycle operation, and transmission connected battery storage. Leading a team of commercial and finance staff, I was responsible for all commercial activity associated with the existing plant, and contributing to other development opportunities on the site. This was a particularly challenging period as market conditions deteriorated for relatively low efficiency CCGT plant, necessitating substantial changes to commercial and operational strategy and ultimately implementing a closure plan when the plan become no longer economically viable.
