I’m a mathematician, have developed new forms of evolutionary machine learning and artificial intelligence, and have authored multiple patents in the field. I was team leader of Team MachineGenes in the IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, and CEO/founder of AI startups in medicine and engineering.I was awarded first class honours in pure mathematics in 1989 and finished my PhD in 1994 at the age of 26, in applied mathematics at the University of Queensland (UQ), specialising in differential game theory. In this thesis I developed an architecture enabling strong control for realistic complex systems, using Lyapunov stability methods in the presence of uncertainty and conflict. The thesis was approved by an international panel of US and German mathematicians and engineers chaired by Berkeley’s Emeritus Professor George Leitmann. Applications of this work include medicine (drug-based medical control of complex biological systems, in particular diabetes) and aerospace (evolutionary reconstruction of computational models of aviation engines and other complex systems).
