I was responsible for the mainframe storage estate for Barclays and Barclays Africa covering day-to-day change, incident and problem management; budget, billing and governance; strategy, procurement and continuous improvement for an estate comprising IBM and EMC disk, and Oracle and IBM tape.

I worked as a Storage Engineer in the z/OS storage team within Global Storage Platforms at Radbroke Hall, Knutsford. I worked on the storage part of a three-site GDPS/MzGM project which later turned into four-site GDPS/MMzGM, the first in the world, and implemented several IBM DS8000 storage servers, including DS8300, DS8700 and DS8800.

I took early retirement from IBM United Kingdom after 32.5 years. I spent a brief period setting up my own company, taking an Open University Linux course and taking part in the running of an IT Architecture course at the University of Manchester.

I focussed on enablement programmes for business partners across EMEA, mainly on education and certification.I have championed the use of new tools for technical support within IBM, rolling out new technical communication processes both within IBM and to IBM business partners.In 2008 and 2009, I gave lectures on aspects of IT architecture at Manchester University.I led a Siebel service request implementation for a business unit of about 50 people across Europe between 2003 and 2005, providing project management and education, and liaison with a US Project Office and application developers in Germany and Russia.In 2002 and 2003, I ran a business continuity project office with the objective of ensuring high quality implementation of storage remote copy solutions in complex environments across Europe. The quality assurance measures instituted were estimated to have saved $7M during the two years the project office was in place.

Project Leader at the IBM International Technical Support Centre, Almaden Research Centre, San Jose California, responsible for leading projects to produce IBM redbooks on tape, tape virtualization, SAN and storage software, in particular DFSMStvs (Transactional VSAM).During this time, I also designed and wrote the IBM training curriculum for the 3494 Virtual Tape Server comprising three courses, and taught high-end tape certification classes for US business partners. I also presented at IBM conferences.

An assignment to the Product Introduction Centre (formerly the ISC) in Hursley, Hampshire, leading early support programmes and beta tests for a range of IBM storage products including SSA disks, the 2105 VSS storage system, LTO libraries and the 3494-B16 and -B18 Virtual Tape Servers. This required gaining expertise in new products quickly, close liaison with and co-ordination of various IBM development and support teams and feeding back valuable early experience to both the developers and to the wider technical support community across IBM in Europe.During this time, I worked with customers in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.

I was responsible for technical support of IBM storage hardware and software for a wide range of customers, initially in the North-West of England but latterly throughout the UK. I worked with many of IBM UK's largest customers including banks, insurance, retail and manufacturing companies.I was the IBM representative for the storage working group of the GSE user group, regularly presenting at meetings and GSE conferences in the UK and abroad.I started and led a project to develop and roll out a range of storage management service offerings which ultimately led to millions of pounds of services revenue, world-wide acceptance and code which formed the basis of IBM licensed software products.Latterly, I did new product introduction, skills transfer and second-level support of IBM storage software, including the technical introduction of ADSM (now known as Tivoli Storage Manager) in the UK.
