  • Bbc
    Presenter / Producer
    Bbc Jan 1996 - Apr 2005
    Northampton
Within a year of employment at BBC Radio Northampton, I had progressed from a part-time studio assistant to having my own weekend show. Within six months I quadrupled the audience. I was soon given the weekday early morning show in which I pulled in the joint largest audience in the county, equalling that of the local independent, and beating all other local, national, commercial and BBC stations. After a sabbatical of employment from the BBC, I returned to present the Saturday and Sunday midmorning shows from nine until twelve. These shows pulled in the largest audience for our station at the weekends. My Saturday morning show had twice as many listeners as BBC Radio One in the county and was only beaten by BBC Radio Two for size of audience within our station’s reach. (source: RAJAR)During my employment at the BBC I achieved many accolades as a presenter, much of this time I self-produced my shows creating a considerable extra workload but allowing me to have creative control of output.Duties and responsibilities:* Maximising audience figures through unique listening experience, ensuring the highest editorial and ethical standards, working within the NUJ Code of Conduct and the BBC Editorial Guidelines, raising awareness of the station within the county and building links within the community.* An integral part of the job included identifying likely interviewees and sources of information for interesting stories/ideas, researching and compiling information, finding and securing contributors, writing scripts including cues and questions, conducting interviews, editing and broadcasting.* For the weekday morning show, I compiled the news agenda, presented quarter hourly news and weather headlines, reviewed the papers and encouraged listener participation through comment and competitions. Sunday’s programme included a weekly paper review with studio guests to analyse and offer comment on stories, analysing current affairs whilst adhering to due impartiality.
