I've been developing software professionally since 1981 and have worked on a wide variety of mainframes, mini-computers, PCs and a small amount on Apple Mac.In recent years I've focussed on C#, Oracle and AWS, supported by deployment tools such as GitHub, Artifactory, Terraform, Ansible and Buildkite. Over the last 40-odd years I've used a variety of programming languages including COBOL, IBM's AS, Visual Basic versions 3 through to 6, HTML, JavaScript, ASP, PHP, and deployment tools such as TeamCity and Octopus Deploy. Other databases I've worked on include SQL Server SQLite, Postgres, MySQL and even DB/2 in the dim and distant past.During the 2000's and 2010's I developed websites for small businesses and organisations, generally from scratch using HTML, JavaScript and CSS. These days I use Wordpress and either Divi and more recently Oxygen to construct websites that can be updated by the website owner directly.I love the technology I come into contact with on a daily basis and enjoy learning new and better techniques for producing software, whether desktop or web based. The technology is just an enabler though, I firmly believe software is a people business, and the individual using the software application must be the most important design consideration and the ultimate measure of success.Away from the keyboard I'm an active member of the Cranleigh & District Lions Club, classic car enthusiast (I own a 1992 British Open Classic Mini and a Mk1 MX-5 with a hankering for a Fiat Panda and a 2CV) and an apprentice drummer .I have recently taken on the role of trustee for Cranleigh Heritage Trust, which is seeking funding to renovate the old Cottage Hospital building in Cranleigh, believed to be the first cottage hospital in England and the birthplace of the NHS.In 2021 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and having been caught early it was treated and as of 2023 I am in remission. I was pleased to be able to record my experiences for Prostate Cancer Research, which has formed part of their Info Pool, aimed at men who have recently been diagnosed and looking for other men's experiences of treatment and the after effects. This has been an incredible opportunity and I've been able to use my experience over the last 40-odd years to help move the company from start-up towards an efficient software development company.
