Profile bio

About Niharika Singh

I'm a Neuroscience researcher who firmly believes that the brain mirrors the Universe: vastly unknown and overly simplified to suit our understanding. Intricacies of the nervous system have always enraptured me which deepened when I first learnt of adult neurogenesis: the generation of neurons in the adult brain as opposed to the existing paradigm of restricted neurogenesis during an embryo's development. Regeneration of neural stem cells in the adult brain has ever since opened multivariant branches to modulate, accentuate, and potentially target diverse disorders of the nervous system and promote healthy aging. My doctoral research focusses on the gray overlap between embryonic and adult neurogenesis: trying to understand how astrocytes (the most populous residents of the brain) are formed in either case through a process called astrogliogenesis. The key player of my research is Zeb1: a transcription factor long studied in the realm of cancer biology. Funded by UKRI BBSRC, my project investigates the transcriptional regulation of astrocyte specification across development and adulthood. Clarifying the role played by Zeb1 in fate specification of astrocytes would address the mechanism by which these cells multiply during glioblastoma: the most aggressive form of brain cancer known today. Employing in-utero electroporation, computational modelling, and morphometric analysis I explore astrogliogenesis from molecular RNA-Sequencing to emergent properties of behaviour.I occasionally bridge my knack for blank verse writing, literature, reflective thoughts, and mental health awareness to explain various shades of Neuroscience on my Instagram page, The Brain Nugget.https://instagram.com/thebrainnugget?igshid=MmJiY2I4NDBkZg==

I am supervised by Dr. Isabel Martinez-Garay, Dr. Florian Siebzehnrubl, and Dr. You Zhou. The key focus of my project are the following: 1. The interaction dynamics of the transcription factor Zeb1 in adult hippocampal neural stem cells (NSCs) to determine the impact their loss has on NSC output, i.e., increasing the number of neurons that are produced at the expense of glial cells.2. Prospective role of Zeb1 in the production of glial cells during development.3.
