As a result of this project, the Maltese government in June 2016 designated eight new marine Special Protection Areas (SPAs) covering no less than 27% of Malta’s Fisheries Management Zone which extends to a 25 nautical mile radius to the Maltese Islands. As a result, Malta is possibly the first EU country where 100% of its marine IBAs have been fully designated as marine SPAs. Show less

The project halted the decline in shearwaters, established the first Marine Important Bird Area for Malta, as well as prepared the first managament plan for a seabird colony SPA in Malta. The successful closure of this project laid the foundations of future LIFE projects on seabirds in Malta. Show less
