How was I supposed to know you couldn't just barge into a newsroom to ask for a job?Striding, without an appointment but with (limited) portfolio in hand, to the desk of the editor-in-chief of one of the most high-profile publications in a town I had just moved to turned out not to be the best way to make a first impression, but everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?Said editor was, however, kind enough though to sit down with this very keen, but very green kid to offer a general overview of the Hong Kong media landscape (after a sharp and not unwarranted rebuke). A couple of well-placed emails later (when I realised door knocking could be just as effective when it was figurative), and I landed a gig on the editorial team at a pioneering digital luxury publication. I quickly found my niche in food writing, but the opportunity to tell stories from the worlds of art, design and travel was equally thrilling. Nearly a decade later, my career has gone in directions I couldn't have foreseen. I've experienced life on both sides of the proverbial media fence, interviewed some of the biggest names in the restaurant, design, music and sporting worlds, attended events I only thought existed in movies, and made lifelong connections, all while continuing to hone my craft and do something that I love.Right now, I'm splitting my time between my hometown of Melbourne and my newly adopted hometown of Sydney. Despite being born and raised here, I've never worked in Australia before, and I'm excited to see what the media landscape here has to offer.It didn't take me long to discover that one of my favourite things about writing professionally is what a privilege it is to hear other people's stories.
