Volunteer
As a volunteer with International Field Research Expeditions, I was assigned to help in whatever way necessary at an orphanage in Boma la Ng'ombe, Tanzania called Kilimanjaro Children's Joy Foundation. I was given little to no instruction and created work for myself where I saw a need to be fulfilled. That being said, the services I provided were initially basic: I carried children to the hospital when they were sick and funded grocery shopping trips to local markets. I began small english classes for those who could not afford uniforms to go to school. After only a few short days, it became apparent that the children and orphanage were disorganized to the point where they were at risk of losing their overseas funding. The majority of my time thereafter was dedicated to organizational repair.I began with records and inventory- many of the children's names and birthdates were unknown and family members alive but not located; crates and crates of donated items were locked away and not distributed; and the available facilities were far over-burdened, housing nearly 4 times their capacity. I visited other more organized and successful orphanages in the surrounding areas to study their programs, methods, and facilities. These orphanages and centers for street children were clean, not overcrowded, and reuniting children with families and tribes throughout the region.Prior to departing from Boma la Ng'ombe, I had brought in a specialist to assist with bringing the facility up to regulator standards, distributed donated goods, left my records for the administration, threw an all-inclusing "birthday" party for the children, and brought in a local volunteer from a neighboring facility to further guide the organization.
Exercise Sport Science Department Worker
I was responsible for the daily inventory, check-in and check-out, and overall care of all Exercise Sport Science Department property, grounds, and facilities in the evening hours and until closing.
