Profile bio

About Dr Niki Wallace

I’m a researcher/educator/designer whose work spans academia (UAL), a living lab (Net Zero Lab), and a design studio (NWD). My approach consciously intertwines radical and rigorous research with real-world experimental action. My work embraces complexity and uncertainty to engage in systemic change through co-research and co-creation. Rather than doing things ‘for’ people I do things ‘with’ people, because systemic change demands more collaborative and regenerative approaches. My research focuses on complex collaboration and design for just transitions. My experience and interests span higher education sector transitions, circular/doughnut economies transitions, the consumption and waste problem, participatory food systems and critical design education.I practice slow-radical design thinking and invest time in articulating problems rather than leaping to solutions. Critical thinking, systems thinking and relational thinking underpin this approach. My methods draw on complex adaptive systems approaches, autonomous design and transition design. Each of these methods brings together my skills as a pattern-sensor, storyteller, writer, illustrator, and designer. When I think about a project (in whatever form that takes) I approach it from a lot of different perspectives, my own and others. Everything I do is underpinned by a drive to improve social and environmental sustainability through justice and regeneration, because this is the kind of design the world needs in order to thrive.

Listed skills include Graphic Design, Graphics, Illustration, Web Design, and 31 others.
