I have been fortunate to enjoy both a career in professional PR practice and, latterly to teach, research and write about social media and marketing. I won't pretend there isn't something of a theory-practice divide in this discipline, but we're working very hard to try and bridge it!In the 90s and early noughties I worked at two of the UK's leading public relations agencies (and for major brands like J&J, DHL, Microsoft, Britvic, Ladbrokes) before hopping over to client side for a while at Microsoft to look after PR for MSN Europe, Middle East and Africa (maternity cover). After returning home to the Midlands, I became more involved with public sector and charitable projects including tackling voter apathy for Nottinghamshire County Council with a focus on engaging young people and marginalised communities.Now as Associate Professor at De Montfort University I teach Public Relations and Social Media Marketing and, alongside Rosalind Masterson have recently completed a comprehensive revision of the 5th Edition of Marketing: An Introduction published by SAGE. My research focusses on social media, consumer socialisation and identity adaptation. OK, OK.... I'm still a psychologist at heart!
