At Green Horwood & Co. I have been able to develop my skills on various taxprep softwares. I got to experience my very first tax season in the ever changing conditions of covid-19. Due to the reduced stress of the tax deadline being moved. I was able to learn about more than just personal taxes. I was able to work on aspects of US taxes and even trusts as well. I value everything that I am constantly learning with every new client.

I, along with 5 other students, planned and organized the 2020 Gustuvson Community Volunteer Income Tax program. My main involvement for this project was working on logistics and developing the training session for the volunteers. I also spent a lot of time assisting and running the interview process for our perspective candidates. Like any project, we had our obstacles, ultimately our team had to make the hard decision about the health and safety of our volunteers with the growing concerns of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, our team decided that we did not want to put our volunteers at risk and had to cancel the clinics. It was really hard to let go of everything we had been working for but I am still so thankful for the experience.

For this job, I utilized and improved my attention to detail and professionalism. Not only was I working along side a professor but I also needed to be impartial and keep a level of confidentiality as I may have known some of the people I was grading. Additionally, as a marking assistant, it is your job to follow the students thought process to see if they can be awarded any follow through marks. This is a lot easier said than done because it is harder than you think to be able to be open-minded about different methods and be open to accepting what the logic behind their method was. This experience challenged me in that I had to look outside of what I would have done and build on my own empathy.

I, along with a co-staff, led seven 14-16 year old girls on a 50-day canoe trip through Northern Ontario. Before we left on the trip, my co-staff and I spend every waking moment planning. This included packing all 50 days worth of food, making sure we had the right maps marked with the correct portages, and getting the right certifications necessary for such an expedition. This experience was not only physically but mentally difficult as we had little to no connection with society or our camp, so we had to hope that we planned everything correctly. We planned a hard route and had to stay on schedule. My co-staff and I worked really hard to ensure the safety and well being of our campers at all times. Through teamwork and persistence, we were able to complete the trip successfully.

I stumbled upon this program and it really appealed to me because I wanted to learn more about taxes and I wanted to help people. This was an amazing experience for me and my career path because I discovered my passion for taxes. I had always been very passionate about accounting but I had never been able to practice what I had been learning in class in a real world setting. I got my first taste of the high stress environment of tax season and I was hooked.

In this position, I was responsible for scheduling and organizing activities for the campers. It was really important that I was organized to ensure that every cabin was going to every activity. Additionally, I had to organize and run an evening activity for kids after dinner each night, which again took a level of organization and task management.
