After I retired in 2012 from a 35-year career in the IT industry, I began volunteering with FRESHFARM Markets in Washington DC. I was fortunate to be assigned to help with the weekly farmer's market that Nikki co-managed. She was well-organized, worked to establish positive relationships with the farmers and producers, made market patrons feel at home and at ease, and provided plenty of encouragement and to me and other volunteers. These skills were ones I had always valued and appreciated during my professional career. From Nikki - and other staff members at FRESHFARM Markets, I have learned much about farmers, producers, markets, and how to increase the connections between local shoppers and the sources of their food. I was impressed with Nikki's creativity with social media, giving broad visibility to the farmers selling at market and their products. Her eagerness to promote the benefits to consumers of locally grown or produced food was unabated. Nikki loved to discover what new foods and products were at market each week, and she would frequently bring back samples for the volunteers to try and enjoy and then brainstorm how to cook/prepare them.
