Ambiance is a clothing boutique for women with four different locations in San Francisco. It is popularly thought of as one of San Francisco's favorite boutiques. My responsibilities working at Ambiance included providing high-quality customer service, assisting clients with finding clothing for a variety of occasions, and communicating with coworkers at the other store locations. Often, I was also responsible for helping close the store, which included cleaning, straightening and organizing the whole store, and taking inventory of the premium clothing collection.

As part of the requirement for my elementary education certification at Connecticut College, I was fortunate to spend the fall semester of my senior year teaching seventeen curious and ambitious second graders. I observed and taught 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I constructed, adapted, and led lessons that aimed to reach my students' strengths and challenges and to create a sense of trust between myself and each learner. I also worked in smaller groups to give students individualized attention and to get to know each student on a deeper level. My greatest responsibility during my time student teaching was to create a unit that focused on the intersection between healthy choices and access to healthy foods. I also constructed a teaching portfolio that demonstrated my responsibilities, philosophy, and teaching approaches.

As Public Policy Associate at AFSP, my responsibilities included staying up to date on mental health and suicide prevention in the news, following congressional committees and states' legislative activity. I also completed a project that outlines AFSP's policy regarding suicide prevention on college and university campuses.One of my biggest responsibilities at AFSP was to help execute the organization's biggest event of the year, their annual Advocacy Forum. The event brought 250 field advocates from all fifty states to Washington, DC to meet with their state legislators to discuss important current mental health reform bills and to advocate for the support of these bills and funding. I helped organize and carry out the event, provided information to the attendees, and I was also able to attend meetings firsthand as I joined advocates from both California and Connecticut.Since I have been involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention since 2012, interning there over the summer has been one of my most rewarding experiences to date.

Jennings is a dual-language elementary school in New London, CT. My first year of college, I was involved with Jennings through the Expanded Learning Time after school program in which Connecticut College acts as a community partner by facilitating engaging and enriching activities for the students. I guided kindergarten and first graders through a variety of recreational and academic activities, many of which were literacy-based.My sophomore and junior years, I worked more closely with students in the classroom during the regular school day. In kindergarten and 4th grades, I have helped students improve elements of literacy such as reading, writing, vocabulary, and analytical skills. In first grade, I assisted with addition and subtraction. Working with diverse age groups has given me appreciation for differences in learning styles, perspectives, and individual experiences.

Kathi O'Leary is a skilled photographer in San Francisco with a passion for teaching children of all ages the art of photography. During her summer photography camp workshops, I worked with students ages 6 to 17, helping them to navigate the world of digital photography and Photoshop, assisting children with shooting, selecting, and editing photos.

The Connecticut College Children's Program is an early childhood preschool program for children between ages 3 to 5. As a teacher's aide, I helped out in the classroom in many ways, mainly by interacting with the children during their classroom activities to stimulate their learning. Much of the time, the classes that I worked with included children of various ages and backgrounds, so I gained a lot of insight about individual differences among children, as well as child development and learning processes.
