Many current regulatory tools remain unchanged for > 50 years. Novel genomic tools (e.g. RNA Sequencing) that I use may fill this gap. I oversaw a diverse team of international collaborators from academia, industry, and government, which resulted in the first use of genomics in human health risk assessment at Health Canada (Crit. Rev. Toxicol., 45, 44-52; 2015).People say that I am attentive to details, capable of seeing that others usually miss. Perhaps, that allowed me to figure out how protein data should be applied to human health (J. Appl Toxicol. 34, 1115-21; 2014; distinguished as one of top 5 publications in 2014 in application of risk assessment by the Society of Toxicology).I enjoy mentoring. I created and taught a 25-hour course at Carleton University entitled “Biomedicine of Stress, Stroke and Heart Diseases” (2010-2011) to over 40 high school students. I found that making a list of achievable milestones helps my mentees publish in peer-reviewed journals (e.g. Canadian Young Scientist Journal, 2: 26-31; 2014).I love talking about my research and when people ask me for a copy of my publication. Usually, people ask me about the applicability of genomics data generated in rats and mice to humans. An excellent framework exists to answer questions like that, which I would be happy to share with you.

ConsultantIntegrated Laboratory Systems Jan 2015 - PresentOttawa, On - Research Triangle Park, Nc, UsaIntegrating Genomics into Risk Assessment: Case Study of Acrylamide-Induced Thyroid Cancer.People are exposed to acrylamide through food (e.g., fried potato), cigarette smoking, water, and occupational exposure. Acrylamide causes cancer of the thyroid gland in rats, but how that occurs is unknown. In this project, I am generating RNA-Sequencing data from rat liver and thyroid to reveal thyroid carcinogenicity mechanisms and their potential human relevance.

Post-Doctoral FellowGenomics Lab, Health Canada Nov 2011 - Dec 2014Ottawa, OnIntegration of Genomics into Human Health Risk Assessment. Our interdisciplinary project on benzo[a]pyrene in drinking water (published in Critical Reviews in Toxicology (2015): 45, pp.1-43 and pp.44-52) led to the first instance of considering genomics data in health risk assessment at Health Canada.

Graduate StudentCarleton University 2006 - 2011Ottawa, OnThesis: "Identification of Nrf1 (NFE2L1) as a hypoxia-inducible factor and its oxygen-dependent regulation." I was very fortunate to receive the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine Mini-Fellowship to work with the top world experts in the field, Drs. Forman and Davies (published in Redox Biology (2013) 1, 183-9). My graduate work has been described in eight publications. More recently, Nrf1 proved to be an important player in human diseases (e.g., neurodegeneration-related diseases) and earlier studies on Nrf1 regulation, like the ones I participated in, will be useful in developing pharmaceutical targets for these diseases. -
Undergraduate StudentCarleton University Sep 2002 - Sep 2006Ottawa, OnDuring my undergraduate degree, I was thrilled to find out about the work of Dr. James Wright, on designing novel antioxidants that could help people achieve healthier aging. One of the hallmarks of aging is accumulating damage to DNA and proteins due to increasing cellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These are implicated in various pathological conditions and are studied by many researchers. The laboratory of Dr. William Willmore had cell culture facilities to test various antioxidants that Dr. Wright’s group were to design. This work led to a publication in Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry (2009): 24, 1319-31.
