Nikolai Dontschuk Email and Phone Number
I am early career experimental physicist | surface scientist | materials scientist who has been manipulating modern materials to develop powerful new sensing technology. I have a particular knack for fabrication problems; and have achieved outcomes where others cannot through my need to rigorously and meticulously control every aspect of a processes coupled with a keen interest in understanding established mechanisms from the ground up.My early academic career has been highly successful with almost 30 peer reviewed journal articles, and have been recently awarded an ARC Discovery Project grant (a rare achievement for ECRs).My recent work has been focused on a highly promising new voltage imaging technology based on diamond fluorescence, with the article now accepted at the prestigious Nature Photonics Journal. I am committed to seeing this technology move from a demonstrated research concept to a new tool to enable neuroscience research to probe the fundamental nature of how our brains learn, form memories and develop consciousness! When I am not working on this goal, or helping to parenting my two beautiful children Max (2) and Ana (6 months) I like spend time in the garden, or in my workshop, or cooking, or playing beach volleyball or brewing beer.

Post-Graduate Research Fellow In Physical BiosciencesUniversity Of Melbourne Jun 2020 - PresentWorking in the bio-sensing group of Dr David Simpson. -
Reserach Fellow In Quantum SensingUniversity Of Melbourne Jul 2017 - Dec 2019Melbourne, Victoria, AustraliaWorking in the quantum sensing group of Prof. Lloyd Hollenberg. My role focused on producing, measuring and analyzing widefield NV Diamond based quantum meteorology of a wide range of interesting materials and samples. This also included ongoing work in studying the diamond surface with soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques at the Australian Synchrotron. - We studied current flow in 2D and thin metals through magnetic reconstructions. - Electric fields both naturally occurring within diamond sensor, and influenced by FET devices fabricated on the sensor surface.- Strain fields that occured within the diamond.- NMR of the diamond surface, and materials placed on top.- The atomic nature of the diamond surface, the presence of surface defects and effect of termination atoms. -
