The field of electronics has been the focus of my curiosity for as long as I can remember. I have always felt an innate drive to understand electronics at a deeper and deeper level. This drive continues to manifest itself throughout my life. It is what led me, as a child, to take devices apart to see what they looked like on the inside, before putting them back together. It was the cause of my obsession with electronics repair and PC building, among other hobbies. It is the reason I ended up enrolling in the Electronics Engineering Technology program at Hawkeye Community College.Since entering the EET program at Hawkeye, my motivation has led to greater academic success than I have ever had at any other time in my life. I have made the dean’s list every semester, with only one left to go. I have never received a course grade lower than an A. I passed the Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA International) Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CETa) exam during my first year, being the only first year student in the program to do so. Additionally, my second-year design project is one of the more ambitious of the student projects. I am developing a DAC/AMP for high impedance headphones, in which the amplifier implements a tone conditioning feature which allows a user to continuously adjust between the sound of an op amp and a vacuum tube. It still has a long way to go, but functions at a fundamental level. The project has also proven to be a perfect opportunity to work on my soldering skill. Working with breakout boards for SMD components and getting everything mounted on perfboard for prototyping has been a rich learning experience. Now I know that I can solder a 0.65mm pin pitch for a 28-pin IC on a breakout board, which I would have been hesitant about at this time last year. As my experience in my program at Hawkeye suggests, when I find something that sparks my curiosity, I fully invest my time and energy into getting as much out of it as I possibly can. This quality has manifested itself in other areas of my life, as well. Most recently, I have taken up an interest in photography. Every time I take my camera out with me, I discover something new, refine an old technique, or find a new creative style. My main goal in life is to never let my curiosity run dry while continuously searching for ways to increase my knowledge and hone my skills.
