• Investigated the role of neutrophils in periodontal disease and systemic health• Independently collected and processed murine samples including blood, bone marrow, peritoneum,adipose tissue, and gingiva for flow cytometric analysis and immunophenotyping of neutrophils• Performed intraperitoneal anesthesia and microsurgery within the murine oral cavity by tying silkligatures around murine molars to induce periodontitis• Wrote and edited ethics submissions for new animal projects in accordance to Ontario’s Animals for Research Act, and the federal Canadian Council on Animal Care• Published papers in Blood Advances, Journal of Leukocyte Biology, and Frontiers in Immunology

• Conducted genotyping of mouse colonies by performing polymerase chain reactions and using safe practice routines to visualize results on ethidium bromide gels• Conducted microscopy analysis of ex vivo specimens to determine the effect of angiogenic treatment on fibrosis in a murine model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy• Mentored new laboratory personnel, including a new laboratory technician and student volunteers• Trained and mentored a 4th year student enrolled in Anatomy & Cell Biology 4480E Research Project and Seminar• Collaborated with students within and outside of the Hoffman lab to troubleshoot and optimize protocols• Responsible for regular laboratory maintenance including washing dishes, autoclaving, making buffers• Worked within a given timeline to meet experiment deadlines

• Selected as one of six recipients for the CMHR Summer Undergraduate Studentship Award• Responsible for investigating biomarkers for the prodromal state of fibrosis; specifically identified PF gene transcripts and assessed the functional importance of identifying genes and gene products• Led a project that consistently identified tissue in a prodromal state in fibrotic specimens to preemptively target pre-fibrotic tissues; outcome of the project will significantly reduce medical costs, prolong life, and dramatically improve quality of life for individuals affected by fibrosis• Reported preliminary data of elevated expression of Wilms Tumor 1 (WT1) in a MDX mouse prior to onset of fibrosis• Presented summer project findings at the 2016 Bone and Join Summer Research Symposium; educated faculty and students on identifying biomarkers for the prodromal state of fibrosis in Duchenne muscular dystrophy
