In addition to tasks identified for a Basic MLA , the tasks undertaken by a Senior MLA involve a higher level of complexity and a requirement for more knowledge and understanding. As such the role requires the use of initiative and to be able to prioritise work. To work as part of the laboratory team to provide a high level of analysis in order to supply results to the point of reporting.Technical and operational:- Carry out a range of routine work procedures and practices according to the laboratory’s SOPs - Perform manual procedures such as pipetting and measurement of volumes.- Prepare samples for diagnostic testing and process them to the point of reporting them.- Safely maintain and run analysers on a daily basis including the processing of quality control samples and make decisions on any out of range QC results.- Ensure important or abnormal results are brought to the attention of qualified staff.- Monitor laboratory stock levels. - Be able to prioritise work and make informed judgements on daily processes.- Enter data manually into the laboratory computer system ready for reporting.- To perform preliminary MRSA tests from chromogenic plates.- Performs more complicated tests, eg. Chlamydia PCR - Release completed urine microscopy reports in line with Departmental protocols.Communication:- Provide and receive routine information in written, electronic or verbal form for your own use but also to inform members of your team or users of the laboratory service.- Attend laboratory briefings when required and any other meetings deemed necessary by your manager.- Attend relevant training sessions when required.- Demonstrate your own duties to other MLAs and where necessary provide them with basic training.

- Processing of laboratory specimens, receiving samples and entering details onto a lab system. This also involves collection and delivery of specimens and results. - Loading/unloading of specimens onto automated analysers.- To weigh out and reconstitute various media and additives according to instructions. Appropriately sterilise, dispense and quality control media. Read and record results of quality control.- Answering the telephone for result enquiries and transferring calls appropriately.- To assist in the Pathology stores in the absence of the storesperson.

Working in a microbiology laboratory that is UKAS accredited, I play a role in potable water testing for many different types of bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella, Mycobacterium and more) within water samples from across the UK. In more detail, I process the samples by membrane filtration onto different agar plates using aseptic techniques at all times and within the given time specification. I can also carry out pour plate testing and reading, along with Legionella testing. I can also carry out environmental monitoring and follow health + safety of a microbiology laboratory.
