The LRT has 4 main operating lines with a total of 33 km. The trams are provided with electrical traction power from either an overhead catenary system (rigid rail fixed to the ceiling of the tunnel) or from a third rail in the middle of the track.The construction of the LRT tunnels and underground station structures has been undertaken throughout various phases: The initial phase 2A comprised of the excavation works for the tunnels commenced in March 2009 and were completed in August 2010. Then the second construction phase 2B, which started in April 2010 consisted of the reinforced concrete tunnel sections. In October 2011, the third phase was launched comprising the excavation and construction of the reinforced concrete underground station boxes. To which the Pearl Interchange station, was added in 2013 to be completed in March 2017.The final phases of works packages are designated as being Phases 2C2 and 2C3. and include all of the remaining works necessary to deliver a fully operational turnkey project, including depot, architectural and electromechanical works, rolling stock, track works, power supply and train control and communication systems.
