As a Social Work Intern at the Camden County Health Department, Division of Senior and Disabled Services, I assist constituents with disabilities and seniors in connecting to the best individualized quality care they deserve in the community. Aging and Disability Resource Connections were developed to promote a "no wrong door" access points for individuals to find and connect to the care they need from one, single entry door.I assist over 50-70 constituents weekly find the care they need and conducted over 200 quality assurance review in order for 30 grantees to ensure that area grant plans are serving constituents as intended and as effectively as possible.I developed and maintained directories for seniors and disabilities that are both over 200 pages long in order to ensure constituents have the most up-to-date information on community resources around the county.

The National Homework Hotline Program was developed due to sudden transition to remote learning in March 2020. Many blind children receive services such as braille, technology or independence, and advocacy training by the teachers of visually impaired. Due to the sudden transition to virtual learning, some of these services became difficult to manage. In addition, some children did not have adequate resources to succeed on equal footing as their counterparts. This program is made up of volunteers who receive requests about certain inaccessibility barriers in the classrooms. We then contact the student, families or professionals assisting them in their learning endeavors to help the students complete their work independently. I have assisted students with managing their Google Docs and other Google Classrooms Platform independently with their assistive technologies. We are a group of mentors who provide support for students to succeed in their classes independently.

The New Jersey Public Interest Research Group is a student-run advocacy group on campus. The New Voters Project is an initiative to turn out the youth vote on local, state and national elections. Young people will be affected the most by the actions and policies of today, therefore, it is extremely important for young people to make their voices heard and create a future that shares their vision. As a grassroot intern, I led educational events, webinars and phone banks to help new student voters register to vote via studentvote.org. In addition, I assisted new voters to develop a plan to vote safely during the 2020 mid-pandemic election. Lastly, I recruited students for available internship and volunteer opportunities with NJPIRG on campus. I was also the grassroots intern for the 100% clean renewable energy initiative on campus. This initiative sought to save the planet by advocating for 100% clean renewable energy plan in the university and statewide level.

As an intern at the Office of Senator Cory Booker, I assisted the staff in the Camden office with daily senate duties. For example, I communicated with the public via incoming phone calls, constituent emails and office visits. I also processed incoming mail daily and inputted constituent opinions and correspondence into the office database. Lastly, I assisted full-time staff with constituent casework and community outreach around Southern NJ. On occasion, I also accompanied full-time staff to local community events on Senator Booker’s behalf. This internship provided me with valuable knowledge and experience on daily constituent services on the government level.

The College Success Program is a resource and mentorship program for transitioning college students who are blind and visually impaired. The program aims to provide resources and mentors to the students in order to succeed in the transition from high school to college. As an intern for the College Success Program, I revised and wrote resources for the College Success curriculum in order to ease the transition from high school to college for blind and visually impaired students. For example, I wrote resources on independently commuting to college, stress management techniques and useful tips to stay organized and succeed in all academic endeavors. In addition, I transcribed and participated in community events run by the College Success Program. I also completed quality assurance reports for audiobooks produced by Learning Ally. Lastly, I completed accessibility testing for Learning Ally products and websites.

The SHARP Program at the New Jersey Commission for the Blind aims to teach young blind children independence and advocacy skills through fun and interactive activities. As a mentor for the children, I coordinated and assisted the staff in running various informative activities for the students through the hands-on alternative reinforcement projects (SHARP). I also assisted the students in various activities while teaching crucial skills such as team-building, communication, advocacy and independence/daily living. In addition, I accompanied the staff and students in community outings. Lastly and most importantly, I acted as the role model for younger students to portray the message that they are defined by their abilities, not disabilities.

The Garden State Pathways Program is the transition program for students with various disabilities at Camden County College. The goal of the program is to prepare students for vocational or college-level educational goals. I mentored students to succeed in their program classes. Specifically, I recorded notes for the students at the end of lecture. I also read and recorded answers for the students on test days, if needed. In addition, I provided general assistance, as necessary, to promote success for all students. By the end of my internship, I taught students the techniques to take their own notes effectively and independently to succeed in future college classes. I also taught them to conduct research online and via their textbooks. Lastly, I taught the students organizational skills through a planner system.

At Camden County College, I demonstrated and taught basic JAWS commands to low vision students. JAWS (Job Access with Speech) is a screen reading software that reads text aloud on the screen for people who are blind and visually impaired. In this role, I demonstrated and taught the basic functions of Jaws to low vision students. I also trained the students to efficiently check email, conduct research, and use word processing applications with JAWS.

In this role, I found out that the students from the SHARP Program at the New Jersey Commission for the Blind were coming to my local Home Depot for an interactive workshop as part of their community outing. I prepared braille materials and instructions for each student. I was involved in the planning of the workshop to ensure accessibility for all participants.

In my Junior and Senior years of high school, I attended the Pre-College Bonner Program at The College of New Jersey. Through this program, students received college-readiness training and college credit in the summer while participating in a community service event. I completed 32 hours of community service at Rising Star Academy. I taught reading, writing, and math skills to 2nd and 3rd graders in a low income school district. Due to high interest and demands of the children, I planned and led a fun interactive activity for students in which they learned about braille reading and writing at Rising Star Academy.

I participated in the iPads pilot program run by the New Jersey Commission for the Blind. Through this program, I assisted visually impaired and blind students using their iPad in their educational setting. I provided assistance to students with adaptive equipment such as braille displays and Bluetooth keyboards. I provided tips and techniques in using VoiceOver, an iOS screen reading software, to maximize class accessibility.
