About Nina Baltierra

"Everybody needs a Nina." That's something a bride said after I provided day-of wedding coordination services for her, and it has been my goal to show up the same way for every role I hold. While I didn't stick with event planning professionally, I did end up in public health, nonprofits, and startups, all of which require a similar can-do attitude and creative project management in the face of a lack of resources and competing priorities.I've dedicated my career to creating the conditions for everyone to live a healthy, happy, successful life:🍎 I taught sex ed to youth in Delaware and Philadelphia in the hopes that they'd make choices that would set them up for success. 💻 I managed the social presence of the Hepatitis B Foundation in order to connect patients to life-saving information. 🧐 I managed a randomized controlled trial of a web-based behavioral intervention for young, Black men and transwomen who have sex with men, liaising with the developers and the participants alike. 📜 I guided state- and local-level public health practitioners to leverage technology to help them influence policy that would make their communities healthier.📚 I helped college and university administrators engage and retain nontraditional students through the use online support services, including an AI-powered text assistant. 💊 I directed special projects at a patient cooperative that connects drug developers to actual patients so that future health innovations integrate the patient experience.🤝 I combatted the loneliness epidemic by helping community builders make connections both online and in-person.While I started in individual health behavior, my focus has shifted to policy, systems, and environmental change in order to make the biggest impact. I also started leveraging technology to level the playing field for individuals and entire fields like tobacco control and higher education. Why that cover photo? Sr. Customer Success Manager

Meetup's mission is to help people grow and achieve their goals through real-life, human connections, and I can attest to it working. I joined the platform as member in early 2012, after moving from Philadelphia to Durham, to try new things and make new friends. That December, my husband and I leveled-up and became organizers of our very own group: Bull City Beer Runners. Since then, our little run club has grown to include thousands of members and, more importantly, has become a thriving, supportive community and created a "third space" for its members. When I decided to move on from Savvy Cooperative, I thought about my interests, curiosities, and skills in conjunction with the tools I already use and love. Meetup easily came to mind and turned out to be the perfect place to combine my learnings as an organizer with my experience in customer success in mission-driven tech.Every day, I get to work with organizers—from those who are just starting out to those who manage vast networks of groups—to help them strategize and leverage Meetup in order to cultivate communities of purpose and connection.

May 2023 - Present

Director, Special Projects

Queens, Ny, Us

Savvy Cooperative is a patient-founded, patient-owned cooperative that ensures patients and caregivers with diverse experiences are given a seat at the table so that health innovators can create better products. In this role, I spearheaded internal mixed-methods research projects to collect patient insights on healthcare topics that are important to patients, caregivers, and industry stakeholders. I collaborated with in-house researchers and marketing to develop reports, case studies, infographics, social media content, and other collateral to disseminate the results externally to generate leads. Additionally, I worked with company leadership to strategize, research, and test new revenue-generating products and services.

Customer Success Manager

Durham, Nc, Us

Upswing is a student services platform that provides synchronous and asynchronous tutoring and advising to nontraditional college students. In my role as a Customer Success Manager (Higher Education Retention Officer in Upswing-speak), I managed relationships with over a dozen community colleges, universities, and nonprofit programs to help them leverage the platform to meet their student engagement and retention goals. My favorite part of the job was working with administrators to understand their needs in order to translate them into user stories to create new features or to prioritize bug fixes.I split my focus between account management and student engagement. For engagement, I wrote content and managed processes for the AI-supported text assistant, “Ana,” that sent timely reminders, resources, and encouragement to students. In addition to bringing Ana to life, I collaborated with the data science lead to design and manage experiments aimed at increasing student usage and leveraged the results to influence communication campaigns or make recommendations about new features.

Sep 2020 - Aug 2022

Executive Director

Carrboro, Nc, Us

I joined the public health nonprofit-cum-software provider Counter Tools as a Project Director tasked with providing technical assistance and training to state- and local-level public health departments across the country. I was thrilled to shift my focus from individual health to population health through policy change. As a Project Director, Director of Operations, and eventually Executive Director, I had the opportunity to put my project management, process improvement, and change management skills to work. I created and refined internal processes as well as made sweeping changes to the organization’s spending practices, particularly as they related to the software the organization developed. Through these changes, Counter Tools went from being on track for bankruptcy in Q3 to ending the fiscal year with a revenue surplus the following June.

Sep 2017 - Sep 2019

Director Of Operations

Carrboro, Nc, Us

May 2017 - Sep 2017

Director Of Programs

Carrboro, Nc, Us

Jul 2016 - May 2017

Regional Project Director

Carrboro, Nc, Us

Oct 2014 - Jul 2016

Social/Clinical Research Assistant (Hiv)

Chapel Hill, Nc, Us

I joined UNC’s Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases to work on an NIH-funded, internet-based HIV intervention for young black men and transwomen. I wrote all of the content for and evaluated the user experience with the website; developed and implemented the recruitment and retention strategy; and screened and enrolled many of the randomized controlled trial’s 500 participants. (See “Publications” for articles related to this study.)Working at the intersection of health, communication, and technology was the start of how I would focus my career for the next decade: leveraging technology to level the playing field and reduce disparities.

Feb 2012 - Oct 2014

Project Assistant

Dublin, Ie

While my stint in corporate America overseeing data quality across five international oncology clinical trials may not seem to fit into my career trajectory, I learned two important lessons at ICON Medical Imaging: 1) I need to be passionate about what I do professionally in order to feel fulfilled personally; and 2) how to craft a simple, culturally-sensitive email.

Nov 2010 - Aug 2011

Program Coordinator

Doylestown, Pa, Us

As a one-person development department, I was responsible for creating and tracking communication campaigns including the monthly e-newsletter sent to over 8,000 subscribers, the winter and spring fundraising appeals, and the annual report. I was also responsible for the record-breaking success of the annual gala, and the first World Hepatitis Day Rally in Washington, DC. Like my time at Planned Parenthood, funding cuts led me to find employment elsewhere.

Mar 2010 - Nov 2010

Youth Program Coordinator

Philadelphia, Pa, Us

I facilitated an award-winning, 21-session comprehensive sexuality education curriculum to over 500 middle school students per year. While I was passionate about the organization’s education arm, I knew its clinical, advocacy, and development functions were critical to Planned Parenthood’s success. I volunteered doing intake in the clinic, traveled to Harrisburg to meet with my elected officials, and served on every fundraising event committee I could. When funding for my program was completely eliminated, I knew that all of my volunteer work, along with my job as an educator, would prepare me for a variety of public health and/or nonprofit roles yet to come.

Sep 2008 - Mar 2010

Community Educator/Outreach Worker

Wilmington, Delaware, Us

I traveled Delaware teaching youth in public and private schools as well as detention facilities about puberty, body image, sex, sexuality, gender, consent and more. I also coordinated affiliate participation at health fairs and engaged in efforts to spread the word about PPDE's services in targeted neighborhoods throughout the state.Living in the Philadelphia area and working across the state of Delaware, though small, made achieving a healthy work/life balance difficult, and I was always on the lookout for an opening in the education department at Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania. I eventually was hired there as a Youth Program Coordinator.
