About Nina Valkanova, Phd
I am a UX- and service designer and a design researcher by training and passion. For more than 17 years I have been fortunate to follow my passion and explore innovative ideas at the edge of technology, design and the arts at different industrial, experimental and academic settings such as Ars Electronica Future Lab, Telekom Innovations, Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design as well as IXDS GmbH (now part of PWC Experience Consulting). As an Experience Design Director at MING Labs, I am interested in how people-centered design can be combined with a thoughtful business approach to create opportunities that are meaningful for people, communities and organizations in an increasingly digital world. Furthermore, I am interesting in expanding the UX toolkit beyond traditional DT methods, including strategic foresight and futuring, but also coding. I believe 100% in prototyping as a mindset of exploration. In this context, I am responsible for Design Enablement across our geographies and teams. In my personal work I have focused on data-driven interfaces for shared or collaborative use in public spaces. In this context I led projects that explore their potential impact in domains such as sustainability, health and well-being, civic participation, as well as IoT in education. Design Lead
Principal Ux Researcher & Project Lead
In my role at CIID, I led the design-driven research activities within the research unit of CIID on the large EU-funded project PELARS. In particular, I have been responsible for leading user research and iterative prototyping on topics such as connected tools and analytics for the future hands-on STEM learning environments. In addition, I have led the overall coordination of a multi-national partnership including industry, academia and non-profit organisations.
Lead Interaction Designer And Researcher
As a visiting interaction design researcher in the Mobile and Physical Interaction Group, I have acted as a project lead for the project MyPosition, which explored novel concepts of interactive polling that can enable engaging, low-barrier civic participation through situated, embodied interaction and data visualization. In this role, I have been leading the conceptualisation, planning, conduct and reporting on design research-, and interaction design activities. I have also collaborated on other projects on mid-air gestural interaction.
Interaction Designer And Researcher
In charge of conducting state-funded research on the application of citizen-driven data visualization, in the domains of sustainability, health and well-being as well as social and civic participation. Project lead on five pilots within the topic, covering the full process from benchmarking, ethnographic research, through iterative design, in-situ evaluation and impact analysis. My design cases within this period have been exhibited in several public and exhibition venues and the research thereof has been reported in high-impact academic publications.
Associate Lecturer
As associate faculty, I co-designed and conducted several studio-based courses aimed to transmit interdisciplinary skills in creativity, interaction design and new media for computer engineering students. The course 'Designing Interactive Systems' focused on creative developments in interactive visualization, by experimenting on the intersection between information aesthetics, information art, ubiquitous computing and multimodal user interaction. The course 'Audiovisual Language and Interactive Narrative' explored the traditional principles of audiovisual language as well as the new means of expression and communication emerging from various technological developments.
Visiting Lecturer
As visiting faculty at ELISAVA, I conceptualised and taught the course ‘Information and Design’ focusing on the fundamentals of visual thinking in terms of perception and cognition and how principles derived from those can be applied in the practice of information design.
Visiting Lecturer
