Visualization of nanocomposite interface by super resolution fluorescence imaging• Prepared rhodamine spirolactam (RS) as a precursor to reduce dimerization and covalently incorporated RS into an epoxy matrix. • Employed Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) through confocal microscopy to probe the interface of a fluorescein labeled nanocellulose and RS functionalized epoxy nanocomposite. II. Super resolution imaging of RS functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) • Synthesized RS covalently functionalized CNTs with different lengths of an epoxy tether. • Characterized CNTs by NMR, Raman, XPS, SEM, TEM, AFM and confocal imaging. • Fluorescent imaged RS functionalized CNTs with both PALM and two photon fluorescent life-time microscopy. III. Multifunctional fluorescent sensors for imaging polymer nanocomposite interface • Designed new mechanically activated fluorescent probe (mechanophore) and UV/water activated fluorescent probe (aquaphore) for super resolution fluorescence imaging, PALM.• Use of aquaphore for sensing humidity diffusion in epoxy thin films at single molecule level -
Graduate Research AssitantMichigan Technological University Nov 2007 - Sep 2012Houghton, MiThe work has been funded by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF) and General Motors (GM) and focused on synthesizing, processing, and characterizing polymers and composites or nanoparticles for drug delivery and low-leaching wood preservation; utilizing in situ TEM to study lithium dendrite growth mechanism in nanobattery.1. Enhance Cancer Chemotherapy: Novel Gold/copolymer Nanoparticles 1.1 Prepared and characterized new block copolymers that target cancer cells and have tunable responses to various temperatures by RAFT copolymerization.1.2 Developed an affordable way to use block sequence and end group placement without compositional change of the nanoparticles to "tune" their temperature responses and to release specific doses of chemotherapy drugs while staying under the radar of the immune system. 1.3 Proposed a new concept of dual treatment by combining chemotherapy and hyperthermia-therapy for cancer patients: coated with the new polymers, gold nanoparticles can "cook" the cancer cells when absorbing visible lights, and deliver an extra punch to tumors.2. Battery Nanotechnology: Measurement of Lithium Dendrite Growth 2.1 Synthesized unique non-evaporating ionic liquids as the electrolyte inside TEM cells with high vacuum environments.2.2. Cooperated in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to discover lithium fiber formation during charge/discharge process on lithium-ion battery electrodes in real time.3. Nanoparticles in Wood: A Novel Approach to Cut Biocide Leaching 3.1 Prepared and characterized novel gelatin based nanoparticles and incorporated biocide within the nanoparticle for controlled release, which reduces biocide leaching to only 10% of that by the conventional method, while maintain the protection again decays.3.2 Proposed a “green approach” to make nanoparticles more cost effective and pollution free: one step, in water and with high as 15% solid loading. -
