I am Sophia, a recent graduate from NUS, holding two majors in both Environmental Engineering and Innovation and Design Programme. I am passionate to solve real life environmental challenges through my problem-solving and design thinking skills. As a young and passionate engineer, I believe engineers are inventors who examine problems before forming action plans to solve them. Laboratory Research Assistant And Marketing Intern
Under my 3 months of attachment at JFE Engineering Corporation, I was tasked with two roles. One of the roles is to work as a research assistant in the NEWRI laboratory, the other role requires me to facilitate marketing work at the JFE Singapore office. Firstly, as a research assistant attached under COE, I was given the opportunity to conduct independent laboratory research. Through this journey, I was able to learn more about the importance of laboratory safety as well as many new techniques to conduct slag characterization. For example, I was able to recap some laboratory skills that I learned in school such as pH testing and performing titration. At the same time, I was also taught other skills such as performing bulk density test, leaching test, acid digestion test and measuring the moisture content of slag samples.I also had the opportunity to work as a marketing intern for the JFE Singapore branch. For this part of the journey I was able to facilitate the feasibility study of a project on 100% recycled plastic pallets. Under this project, the marketing team had to evaluate the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) of this project. Throughout this journey, I had the opportunity to attend a site visit to NinJa Van to understand better how we can recycle plastic from the delivery sectors. I was also tasked to do basic market demand research for other projects such as electric vehicle charging and the possibility of an oil palm Empty Fruit Branch energy industry in Singapore. Throughout this journey, I was able to learn more about marketing work and accomplish competitor analysis and market sensitivity analysis.
