About Ninni Kähkönen She/Her

I'm a sustainability professional and environmental activist, passionately concerned about climate change, extinction of species, equality and human rights. I'm a generalist aiming to find a job where I can play an active role in the journey towards a world that puts ecological sustainability and planetary boundaries before economic growth, taking care of both the human and other species' well-being and equity at the same time.To reach my goal I studied a minor in sustainability at Åbo Akademi open university in 2020, besides full-time work, and since lifelong learning is my passion, too, I decided I need to learn more and applied to the University of Helsinki to study environmental studies. I definately feel that this is my thing, and as proof of my high motivation I passed the bachelor's degree in two years instead of three. I graduated in spring 2023 and continued to the Global Sustainability Master's program. My strengths are holistic systems and futures thinking, great interpersonal skills as well as project management experience.I am a career changer with a Master's degree in business administration from the nineties and a long work experience in finance, sales and account management. My former career has taught me goal orientation, as well as defined my naturally good interpersonal and communication skills to an excellent level. I want to use these skills for creating a more sustainable and better way of living on planet Earth for all of us depending on the future prosperity of it. I'm ambitious and motivated by constant learning. My creative problem solving skills and can-do attitude together with an entrepreneurial spirit help me aim high. I can't wait to start working with sustainability issues and therefore want to take the first steps on my new career already besides my studies.My motto is: There are no problems, only challenges.

    I did the career orientation required for my environmental science studies at Greenpeace. I played an important role in updating the campaign strategy for the Finnish forest campaign by arranging and participating in 18 interviews with experts from various organizations that could help us update our understanding of how the Finnish forestry sector is prepared for the international and national obligations regarding both biodiversity and climate. In addition to these interviews I conducted information searches and analyses of for instance the annual reports of the three big forest industry companies in Finland: Metsä Group, Stora Enso and UPM. I wrote a report of all the information I had gathered from the interviews, research reports and other information.The feedback I got was overwhelmingly positive. It was easy for me to dive in and just start working as I had been working at Greenpeace before and knew the organization and still had some old colleagues there. Also, my knowledge of the Finnish forestry sector was good and during my internship I learned a lot more. My efficiency and writing as well as informations search skills were very much appreciated. My supervisor was sorry that he wasn't able to offer me a job as he would have been very happy to keep me.The internship was a win-win deal, as Greenpeace got an exceptionally well informed person to do a project that helped them refine and renew their forest campaign strategy and I learned a lot about how to build a campaign in an environmental NGO and got a lot of potentially useful contacts.

    I worked as fundraiser in the Greenpeace Nordic Helsinki office. I was responsible for all fundraising campaigns, and am especially proud of introducing face-to-face fundraising in Helsinki for the first time in the summer of 2000. The Direct Dialog Campaign (DDC), as we called it at the time, was a huge success and managing a team of young and enthusiastic people was a lot of fun. I did all the recruitment and educated the staff myself during the first summer. Later as the office grew we recruited a fundraiser who was responsible for DDC and I was able to concentrate on online fundraising, which was my area of expertise over the whole Nordic region. I worked closely together with the web department on this and also visited the Greenpeace US office in Washington D.C. for a couple of months during summer 2004 to learn from them about online fundraising and to assist them.
