About Nipun Dave

I believe "I am working only when I am not having fun". So far, I have been lucky enough to be having a lot of fun. As the Sr Director of Engineering at Typeface, I am extremely excited about empowering everyone to express their unique imagination using Generative AI. I love designing and building great products. I choose to work on only those products that answer "NO" to the question: "Can users of the product go back to a life where it does not exist?".My hobbies include portrait and landscape photography, reading, hiking, and exploring cultures. I like to understand concepts the way the original authors conceived them. Hence my preference for reading a book before watching the movie. Also, I am a huge fan of the shows "The West Wing" and "Newsroom". Don't judge a book by its cover and don't judge me based on just my skills and experience. To help you understand more about my personality, my influences, and my passions, I have shared some moments from my journey so far on https://www.nipundave.com.

We had been torn between focussing on the owner of the profile and on the viewer. Until earlier this year, we chose the former. However, we realized that doing the latter will help us get a lot closer to achieving LinkedIn's mission of connecting world's professionals with economic opportunity. With this realization, we replicated the offline experience of getting to know someone in the Profile Viewing experience. This was launched as a part of Project Voyager.

  • Linkedin
    Intern
    Linkedin Jun 2010 - Sep 2010
    Sunnyvale, Ca, Us
While studying at Stanford, I interviewed with a few different companies for a summer internship. Amongst all the interactions, I got the best vibe from my interviews at LinkedIn. I still remember the concern that the recruiter, Doris Tong, demonstrated while helping me find the right team in the company. I worked on techniques to predict when users would access to LinkedIn. With this ability, we could prewarm the cache with their data and thereby improve the performance. After some experimentation, I found that the Naive-Bayesian model with a small set of features performed quite well. I worked on scaling out the solution for millions of members with Hadoop. This was my first time ever doing any real software development outside of a class. So, I worked on a bunch of different hacks where I learned Ruby-on-Rails, Hadoop and developing applications that scaled.
  • Bmw
    Student Developer
    Bmw Jan 2010 - Jun 2010
    Munich, De
Since the age of 15, I had the dream of owning a BMW. On my way to college, I would pass by a BMW dealership and every time I would tell myself: "I am going to own a BMW".At Stanford, I took a course "CS 210 - Software Development with Corporate Partners" where I luckily had the opportunity to work on a project with the BMW Technology Office with 5 other car crazies. We were given the objective of enhancing the driver's experience with the car using the cell phone. We developed an iPhone application "Dasher" that would allow racing enthusiasts to create, relive and share their driving experience. It would record the GPS location, acceleration, braking, gear shifts and various other performance metrics during the drive. The driver could thereafter review all this data along with a video of them driving in the racetrack. It was exhibited at the Stanford EXPE 2010 on June 3rd and the CS Senior Project Software Fair. It won the Apple prize at the fair. The concept has since been developed into a product that is sold with the BMW M6 cars.

MoFirst was the first Indian startup with the technology that enabled conduction of Banking transactions, including POS transactions, over the mobile phone. At the beginning of 2007, there were about 80 million Indians with access to a mobile phone but only 30 million that had access to banking facilities. We started MoFirst with the dream of bridging this gap and providing every human with reliable access to banking facilities. Some of my tasks as one of the cofounders of the startup included• Analyzed the banking landscape to determine the target market• Developed the idea into a product while taking into account all possible usage scenarios• Formulated the communication protocols for the transactions and documented them.• Prepared the Terms and Conditions document for the usage of the technology• Developed backup plans for entering the market requiring Rs.6 million as opposed to the initial Rs. 20 million required, which are being currently employed. The technical suggestions proposed by the team have been incorporated in the RBI’s Operating Guidelines for Mobile Banking. As we presented our product to various banks, we realized that it is possible to be too early to the market. The company thereafter went on to build a lot of other successful applications while I went to Stanford to pursue a Masters.
  • Epfl
    Summer Intern

As I entered my third year at IIT Bombay, I wanted to live in a different part of the world, learn more about the local culture and work on a research project. I had the opportunity to do all of that at the LSRO Lab in EPFL. I worked on improving the performance of an absolute position sensor's resolution that was used to detect the location and orientation of a micro-robot that could take steps as small as 10nm. I improved the algorithms in the sensor which brought the resolution down to 0.2 µm from the initial 4 µm and simultaneously reduced per-frame processing time from 80ms to 15ms using an innovative yet simple algorithm.
