Acupuncture is one of the modalities of Oriental Medicine, an ancient, holistic system of healing. Acupuncture is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with acupressure, Tuina, Shiatsu, and Chi-kung (also referred to as Qi gong).Traditional Chinese medical theory is that Qi, the vital life energy, flows through specific bodily pathways, called meridians. Various therapies are used to help stimulate and balance the flow of vital energy along the meridians. In acupuncture, very fine needles are inserted into the skin to stimulate specific points on the body. This therapy has been used for more than 3,000 years in China as a major part of their primary health care system, and is used today for the prevention of and treatment of diseases, for the relief of pain, and as an anesthetic for surgery.There are various painless, non-needle methods of acupuncture administration, including electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and laser. Acupuncture is used to treat ailments such as arthritis, tension and stress, aches and pains, and menstrual cramps, as well as for general preventive health care.
