I intend to contribute further to the understanding of human diseases using research methods from both the chemical and biological disciplines and to develop novel treatments for unmet patient needs.

Development of novel peptides based on a rational approach for regulating protein-protein interactions as a therapeutic target. 1) Ischemic heart disease: Developed a peptide inhibitor specifically preventing the phosphorylation of only one of the δPKC substrates, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK). Such a selective inhibitor has never been described.

Collaboration with Dr. Dan Zilberstein. Development of novel peptide inhibitors targeting essential enzymes in leishmaniasis in a host-free system.

Collaboration with Dr. Eric Dumonteil, Laboratory of Parasitology. In vivo efficacy study of novel peptide inhibitors in Chagas’ disease animal model. Performed in vivo study for peptides that were developed based on rational design, one peptide inhibited the parasitemia by over 60% and increase mice survival > 25%.

Supervised and trained graduate students in basic research and experimental design, emphasis on protein expression and purification as well as protein-protein interaction assays. The students continue for graduate studies in the lab.

Collaboration with Dr. Deborah Schechtman, Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry Institute. Developing novel peptides to optimize bioactivity for targeting Trypanosoma Cruzi. Developed backbone cyclic libraries of peptides based on rational design and identified one peptide with anti-parasitic bioactivity in vitro and in culture (IC50 of ~8 µM).

Designed and synthesized cyclic peptide libraries to optimize the recognition of specific autoantibodies as biomarkers of Multiple Sclerosis. Developed backbone cyclic libraries of glycol-peptides based on the known active sequence and identified peptides with improved stability and.
