About Nish Amarnath

I play with words, numbers, data and imagery to descend into the life-worlds of people and organizations and weave stories of varying textures around different strands of experiences. I majored in Economics (with specialization in Econometrics), earning a Distinction at university. I hold Master's degrees in media research and business journalism from the London School of Economics and Columbia University (where I was a James W. Robins fellow), respectively. With that background, I bring a solid analytical foundation to my storytelling as a journalist and communications practitioner who has mainlined critical sectors such as energy, ESG, healthcare, real estate, aviation and technology across both sides of the Atlantic for over 15 years. In that period, I've led teams ranging from four to 13 members. I was one of five journalists nominated for an industry award across North America in 2017 for my coverage of the midstream energy sector. I value the mutual trust that drives my relationships with sources, colleagues, sector experts and influencers - a quality that has catalyzed some of my best, biggest and most critically acclaimed stories. One of my long-form features on the environmental and health hazards of Constitution Pipeline catalyzed New York state's denial of a Section 401 permit required for its construction. The permit rejection that followed my story ultimately resulted in the operator, Williams Cos scrapping the project after an eight-year court battle. Earlier on, my exposé on a labor trafficking racket in Bahrain, while at International Business Times (Newsweek at the time), catalyzed the release of 112 migrant workers who had been detained for more than six years under the country's Kafala system. On the other side of the boat (PR and communications), which guided the first half of my career, I was the youngest professional to lead a highly sensitive public diplomacy mandate for the UK Government. Other clients I've worked with include Facebook and the brainchild behind a popular TV show.I've authored two non-fiction books, including a monograph originally written for my Master's thesis at Columbia University. My third book, Victims for Sale (HarperCollins, 2018) was nominated for a prestigious word-to-screen award. As an author, I am represented by FinePrint Literary Management (NYC) across North America.     My latest book, VICTIMS FOR SALE (HarperCollins, 2018) was nominated for the Mumbai Film Festival Word-to-Screen Award and went on to become a bestselling title in India. I have shared my voice at various platforms, including the United Nations in New York, U.S. State Department affiliates, British Council outposts, Poets and Writers-sponsored initiatives, the New York Writers Workshop and the Algonkian NYC's New York Pitch Conference, pegged by Writer's Mag as one of the top ten literary conferences in North America. I briefly worked under the guidance of Al Zuckerman, founder of Writers House in New York and a midwife to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. Al Zuckerman has groomed and launched various bestselling authors ranging from Ken Follett, Mario Puzo, Nora Roberts, Olivia Goldsmith and Michael Lewis. I'm currently represented by FinePrint Literary Management (NYC) and TGS Literary Agency (North America + UK + Commonwealth) for future titles. As an author, I have been championing various social causes, including those related to Type-1 diabetes, people of color, soaring US drug prices, mental health, the #MeToo movement, inclusion, disaster recovery and autism. My initiatives have included mobilizing support from the Government of Bangladesh to push for increased budgetary resources for individuals with autism. I'm also a part-time New York Writers Workshop faculty member (pro bono).
