When I make maps, I explore the world or think of ideas, searching, sifting, combining, and filtering data with colors and animations. I see things come to life, like revealing a black-and-white image in color. I become fully immersed in the creation and experience.Patterns, stories, and hidden truths emerge, showing parts of the world in ways no one has seen before—sometimes in ways people didn’t know were possible. These maps become visions, insights, or practical tools.My journey began at a young age, captivated by a World Atlas DVD, where I explored layers for hours. As web mapping platforms emerged, I started creating my own maps, beginning with an animation of my town’s growth over time. I saw the potential of maps to show us how we became what we are, and where we may choose to go.I continued teaching myself and sharing my work, leading to my role as Content Director at MapStory. There, I guided projects that mapped history, genealogy, geology, migrations, conservation, industries, and current issues. Now, as Mapping Director at Mapping Early New York, I weave together the intricate history of New York City.I’ve created the best historic web maps, the best COVID-19 pandemic map, conservation maps for rewilding, maps for a legal firm, and of current events, all serving as visionary tools and practical guides.While I develop maps, I hire GIS experts for specialized tasks, and coders to build the web maps. I’m adept at managing projects, having hired over a hundred people in more than fifty countries, and over the years.Beyond mapping, I explore multimedia, crafting narratives through writing, websites, and videos.
