I can see it clearly even today: my younger self, standing in the hospital clean utility room, staring at the supply cart. Once again, I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Once again, I didn’t have what I needed to take care of a patient.I sighed, and walked back to the nurses’ station, my stethoscope swinging on my neck. I plunked myself down onto a chair, glared at one of the nurses and lamented why we can’t find anything on our unit and why we always seem to be in perpetual need of supplies. A battle-tested, veteran nurse, she was smiling at me, and shrugged, “it’s always like this.”I sat there stewing. Why was it always this way? Listening to the beeps and chimes of monitors, I made my decision: after finishing nursing school, I was going to grad school and would become a hospital administrator so I could fix this problem.I was energized and inspired by the idea of it. As far back as I can recall, I enjoyed the excitement of a challenge. I also gravitated toward the helping professions from a young age; often expressing interest in being a teacher, a doctor or a nurse. I knew I wanted to make an impact in a real way, and I was determined to do it.I’m proud to say that whether as a registered nurse, strategic planner, hospital operations executive, leadership coach or consultant, my work has had meaning and made a difference to patients, families, my staff, and my colleagues. Whether I was opening a new unit, leading a merger, or coaching clinicians to their highest potential and superior outcomes, my work wasn’t just a job.It was a mission, a calling, and a profound responsibility which I eagerly embraced.I took that calling in a different direction in 2018, when I opened my own business. It was a dream that had been compelling my attention for a few years, and I made my dream a reality. I am honored and proud to serve the healthcare industry I love, guiding them in solving complex problems and building leaders in their organizations.It’s been quite a ride. I’m looking forward to the next leg of the journey, wherever it takes me.
