About Nancy J. Smyth, Phd
Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work: I have been on the UB faculty since 1991 and served as dean from 2004-2021. I have a Futures Thinking certificate from The Institute for the Future and am a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress. My social work practice experience has been in both mental health and addiction treatment settings for over 35 years as a clinician, manager, educator, researcher, and program developer. I've also been exploring the interface between social work, human connections, and technology.Under my leadership, the School of Social Work:1) produced the first School sponsored social work podcast, inSocialWork (formerly known as Living Proof) (http://www.socialwork.buffalo.edu/podcast/), which won a 2013 media award from the National Association of Social Workers2) incorporated a trauma-informed and human rights perspective throughout our MSW program3) rose in the U.S. News and World Reports Rankings from 46 (out of 200) in 2008 to 21 (top 10%) in 2021.4) Launched an online DSW program focusing on implementation science, trauma and human rights, and developing skills in the applications of new technologies to social work practice.Specialties: technology for social good, psychological trauma, EMDR, The best platform to connect with me is Twitter, where I am part of a global social work community, and an active social work technology community (#swtech).
