  • Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems Llc
    Senior Principal Engineer
Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems Llc Sep 2010 - Present
    Elyria, Ohio
Lead hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator hardware architecture and software platform design for real-time dynamic vehicle simulation. Specify hardware and software for new capabilities as well as oversee and manage day-to-day operations. Lead project planning meetings to coordinate work plans, monitor status, and resolve technical problems. Responsible for estimating project costs, managing budget, and preparing and presenting presentations to management. Other responsibilities include maintaining documentation and training of users.Led development of DAS (driver assisted systems) HIL. Played key role in specifying hardware and defining and developing software to create a new system that resulted in improved testing capabilities and greatly reduced time for performing tests. System was so successful that it was replicated in three other company sites around the world.Led development of driving simulator for use at company trade shows to demonstrate latest technologies. Resulted in winning multi-million dollar contract. Received outstanding performance cash award for completing project on a compressed schedule and successfully managing coordinating multiple projects and priorities.Led engineering team that conceived, planned, and implemented fault insertion (FIU) hardware testing on the HIL to perform rigorous and comprehensive testing of ABS and stability control software to assess behavior of vehicle controller for proper operation.Led development of autonomous vehicle braking software for military vehicles. Responsible for software assurance including hazard and fault analysis to ensure safe and reliable operation. Oversaw review meetings to address and propose solutions to technical issues.Responsible for designing test matrices to assure proper software operation and compliance with policies, practices, and procedures to lead software from A-sample to production status.Coached engineers at OEM facilities to implement HIL capability.
  • Qinetiq North America
    Senior Aerospace Engineer
Qinetiq North America Dec 2000 - Apr 2010
Developed Monte Carlo time domain simulations with high fidelity 6 degree-of-freedom dynamics and clearance algorithms to perform independent verification and validation (IV&V) on Atlas IIAS, Atlas III, Atlas V, and Delta IV launch vehicles to determine flight probabilistic success. Languages used: MATLAB, C, Simulink, EASY5, FORTRAN, and Stateflow.Oversaw and performed many different types of vehicle separation analyses including: pad drift, CBC separation, stage I/II separation, and space vehicle (SV) separation to: study vehicle dynamic response, calculate clearances, and to ensure that all mission requirements were met; results from these simulations contributed toward receipt of over $20 million of award fees from DoD.Developed several new analytical algorithms using MATLAB to calculate clearance between vehicle objects, which resulted in improved accuracy and much faster computation.Received special cash bonus award in 2009 for outstanding performance on vehicle separation analyses.Managed and set up SourceSafe configuration management database for all software (hundreds of functions) developed in Flight Controls group; oversaw configuration management log spreadsheets and documentation.Provided knowledge and guidance by reviewing, critiquing, and signing-off on co-workers' reports that dealt with separation analyses.Developed employees by mentoring and coaching junior engineers.Performed both time and frequency domain analyses for Titan/Centaur missions to determine stability margins for vehicle autopilot. Vehicle dynamics included bending modes and propellant slosh modes.Served as Lead Software Engineer for development of flight software for Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) project for NASA. Participated in planning meetings to integrate all of the systems of the project. Developed software specifications, requirements, design, and performed coding in C. Also responsible for defining hardware platform.
  • Aeroflex Lintek Corporation
    Software Engineer
Aeroflex Lintek Corporation Nov 1997 - Nov 2000
Served as Lead Software Engineer for the Lintek 4000 Radar product line. Managed software design, coding in C/C++, implementation at customer sites, and technical support.Designed and coded user interface for STI1000 satellite testing system for in-house and customer use using Labview software. Received special cash bonus for outstanding work.Extensive experience writing code in C/C++ and Labview to control VXI and GPIB instrumentation including A/D converters, AWGs, network analyzers, and RF sources using PCs or National Instruments' Slot 0 controllers as system controller. Also have experience with MXI and PXI bus interfaces.Utilized VxWorks using Tornado development environment for doing real-time data acquisition. Created hybrid OS for use on National Instruments' Slot 0 controllers. Using TCP/IP, data acquisition was done remotely by user running software on Source PC which communicated with Target to collect data and send it back to Source.Wrote driver software in C/C++ for Orbit/FR positioner for use in Elan Radar system.
  • Analex Corporation (Now Part Of Qinetiq North America)
    Control System Engineer
Analex Corporation (Now Part Of Qinetiq North America) Jan 1990 - Aug 1996
As Lead Software Engineer, designed and coded crew training simulator software for NASA astronauts for CM-1 space shuttle project using Labview. Involved with integration of hardware packages with software, testing, and debugging.Developed data compression and image processing algorithms for use with Data Compression and Image Processing Breadboard. Researched, developed, and provided customer (NASA) with algorithms in C and MATLAB for transmitting images and data from space shuttle to earth in real time. Wrote specifications, requirements, and purchase requests for hardware and software. Also developed algorithms for Automated Positioning and Tracking Breadboard to automatically control camera movement for photographing experiments performed on space shuttle in real time.Using EASY5/W and MATLAB, created computer simulations to test control systems for Alpha and Beta joints and CMGs for Space Station Freedom. Also studied friction and flexible modes on the vehicle. Performed independent verification and validation on other engineers' models created at other NASA centers.Developed plant and controller model in support of ECRL Preheater project using EASY5/W.
