As a high school social studies teacher, you grow used to people marveling over the work that teachers do. I don’t stop them. If anything, I believe that teachers are undervalued regarding their qualifications in the business world. This is a stereotype I intend to change.What skills are honed in a classroom? In my time teaching, I have gained experience in public speaking, conflict management, data analysis, and instructional design. Every day, I work with one hundred plus clients, each of whom has their own needs and unique challenges. And beyond these clients, I coordinate with a diverse team that is mandated to follow strict legal guidelines, razor tight budgets, and directions from both the local and national community.These skills are endless in their transferability. Parent-teacher conferences relate to status meetings. Grade evaluation is data analysis. Lecturing is public speaking. The implementation of cutting-edge educational software puts teachers at the forefront of technological support and development.If a desirable skill exists, then a teacher has mastered it. In my personal life, I enjoy exploring the outdoors with my wife Alex and my dog Hank. I volunteer with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and I practice creative writing as a dedicated hobby.Teachers change the world, teachers both current and past.
