About Nathan Mathewson, Phd
With over 10 years of experience in immunology and cancer research, my professional journey reflects my steadfast passion for developing innovative solutions in oncology, specifically targeting and enhancing the human immune system.Currently serving as the Cell Therapy Lead at Asher Biotherapeutics, I strategically leveraged AsherBio’s cis-targeting platform to deliver a comprehensive cell therapy data package, readied for partnership initiatives and IND studies. In my role, I oversee cross-functional teams specializing in crucial aspects of drug development such as pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, protein engineering, cell manufacturing, in vivo studies, and biochemical and molecular assays. Notable achievements include managing multiple external collaborations that have resulted in groundbreaking in vivo data, including a CAR-T cell model of leukemia and CAR-T cell-driven B cell aplasia in rhesus macaque non-human primates. I also directed an in-house team of in vivo specialists to develop a CAR-T cell solid tumor model of melanoma, enabling in-depth exploration of novel T cell biology in combination with CRISPR-based engineering techniques. My academic background, coupled with my industry experience, has provided me with a solid foundation and enables me to bring diverse perspectives and experiences to the team. After obtaining my PhD in Immunology, I further refined my expertise through a postdoctoral fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and was promoted to instructor at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. My contributions provided the pivotal data responsible for Series A funding of a biotech startup which advanced the developed molecule to Phase I.My experience in leading research initiatives, securing funding in competitive environments, and overseeing scientific teams in both industry and an academic setting has equipped me with a unique and well-balanced skill set to address the challenges in immuno-oncology.
