I developed biomedical applications for porous carbohydrate polymer networks in the fields of tissue engineering and bioseparations. I stabilized the structure of the polymer network to create a hydrogel to grow cells into new tissues and to locally deliver bioactives, with a specific aim for skin wound regeneration. Presenting my work at conferences strengthened both my communication with the broader scientific community and challenged me to be critical in the development of new technologies. Graduate school provided a platform to both mentor and guide students through projects as a Teaching Assistant, and to manage the execution of two conferences and a pitch competition including budgeting, coordinating with speakers, attendees and venues, marketing and managing timelines.

Engineering Orientation Week at the University of Waterloo welcomes 1600 incoming first year students with 400 volunteer leaders in a week-long event. I hired and trained the leaders, oversaw 10 directors that created and modified large events, requiring careful budgeting and the writing of action plans outlining the full plan of how the event would be prepared for and executed and liaised between the faculty and the student body, taking both views into consideration to prepare the best week possible to welcome the new class to the university.

I was responsible for the development of protocols to modify nanoparticle sensor chips to attach different ligands for Nicoya's bench-top surface plasmon resonance unit. I also wrote the procedures for customer use of these sensor chips. Further, I evaluated the consistency of the sensor chips and developed a quality control method to use optical methods to screen the sensor chips before shipment.

I synthesized and characterized a polymer based nanoparticle containing chemotherapeutics, developing strict quality controls ensuring a consistent drug for animal trials through MALS, NMR, LCMS, and DLS. I developed a protocol for the use of the MALS equipment. I produced the polymer and nanoparticles for a large scale animal trial which required careful organization and time management, and strict attention to detail to ensure deadlines were met with all material complying with standards

I characterized potential coatings for concrete to increase the safety and improve the ride for drivers through increasing the friction when wet and decreasing the noise caused by tires on pavement. This position was held during one of my school terms, requiring good time management to perform and analyze experiments and results while maintaining a regular school semester of 28 class hours a week.

I formulated and prepared carbon black dispersions that were incorporated in polymeric composites and deposited using coating techniques onto substrates to be tested.
