Ocean Connect is a 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds and communities to find their unique way to connect with the ocean and provide them with the resources they need to turn those connections into reality. Ocean Connect is working to end the disparity in the availability of ocean-related academic and career opportunities between students from underrepresented communities and those from communities that have access to greater resources. Responsibilities include developing and implementing the organization’s strategic, business and marketing plans, coordinating the production of content for the Ocean Connect website, and overseeing the organization’s social media presence.

Responsible for overseeing the design, development, and creation of content for a website (www.ocean-connect.org) that is being sponsored by the Girguis Laboratory at Harvard University. Content produced includes snapshots of ocean-related pursuits, narratives for tutorials, interviews with professionals, model documents and other website content. Created the first centralized, fully searchable database of ocean-related internships, research programs, academic programs, training programs, scholarships and programs that encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsible for drafting the Ocean Connect policy statements on leveling the playing field for ocean-related opportunities and on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Assisting faculty with classroom and field instruction for a 4-week advanced marine biodiversity course: Life on the Edge. Responsible for preparing lesson material and supervising students while conducting field research. Helping students learn about the science of marine coastal environments. sea-level rise, invasive species, and pollution.

Responsible for creating content for the Lab’s new website that was designed to show high school students that there are different ways in which they could pursue an academic or professional career that was connected to the ocean. Wrote about the connections that could be made through science, art, commerce, and advocacy. With the support of Professor Girguis and my internship mentors, the work that was begun during this internship is what lead to the creation of the Ocean Connect website and eventually, to the founding of Ocean Connect, Inc. as a nonprofit organization.

One of only 39 youth selected nationally to be on the US Youth Advisory Council for the UN Ocean Decade. Youngest member of the first cohort of a diverse group collaborating to further the UN Ocean Decade goals in a way that best served the members in each of their communities with a commitment to inclusion, outreach, and engagement.

Co-lead delegate for the State of Connecticut responsible for lobbying members of Connecticut’s U.S. Congressional delegation to pass H.R. 8632, the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act, as part of the 2021 Ocean Climate Action Lobby Day.
