About Noah Buckalew

Over the years, I have been blessed to work with some truly outstanding people, and have learned much from them. I have had the opportunity to work in some very different roles, and have had success in all of them. I am a big believer in being a life-long learner, and the day and age we live in makes knowledge more accessible than ever. My passion lies in both lean principles (Toyota Production System) as well as information technology (IT). My love for information technology can be traced back to when I was a kid, and my dad brought home an IBM PC-jr. After beating "King's Quest", my dad was gave me a book on C programming. I took to it, and programmed an ASCII Super Mario Brothers clone that I could play. I have always had a knack for optimizing and processes, especially with computers and technology. Beyond that, each day I try to work off basic the basic principle of service, and respect for people.

  • Alpine Home Medical Equipment
    Branch Manager
Alpine Home Medical Equipment Jan 2013 - Apr 2015
    Greater Salt Lake City Area
In 2013, I was given the opportunity to take over the Salt Lake Branch, which was the largest branch at Alpine Home Medical Equipment, with a team of ~30 people and annual revenues of $5M. I saw this as a great opportunity to put many of the leadership and lean principles I had been teaching over the years into action. This was a very challenging time for my Branch, as the branch was in the process of losing a contract for a major payer, and absorbing many of the operational duties and costs of other branches. Despite these, and many other challenges, our team was able to grow revenues by $2M in the 2 years I served as branch manager, and we were consistently ranked among the top performing branches in the company. Outside of management and operations for the Salt Lake Branch, in this role I was responsible for the financials and operating budget for the Salt Lake Branch. Using my prior knowledge of data/coding, I imported financial statements into a database, which allowed me to identify trends quickly and easily, both within my own branch and others. This allowed me to capitalize on opportunities quickly, and take action on problems while they were small.
  • Alpine Home Medical Equipment
    Lean Coordinator
Alpine Home Medical Equipment Jan 2012 - Dec 2012
    Salt Lake City
In 2012, I assumed the position of Lean Coordinator within Alpine Home Medical Equipment. My main focus was to help the entire company adopt a lean culture, and follow many of the principles outlined in the Toyota Production System and Operational Excellence. I served as a project manager on many lean initiatives, lead individual and group based coaching and training sessions, and facilitator in many kaizen rapid improvement events. In these rapid improvement events, I utilized many lean principles to achieve great outcomes. Following the kaizen events, I routinely served as project manager to help implement the desired changes. This taught me quite a bit surrounding what works and what does not work when trying to implement change, and how important the project management process is.I routinely visited each branch, and coached and trained their staff on lean principles. I saw individuals and departments which adopted lean principles increase their productivity dramatically in many areas. It was great to see so many "ah-ha" moments with them, and I have seen the many of them move on to be very successful people. It was while in this role that I really came to understand the importance of culture and how it can drastically affect lean. Additionally, while in the role of lean coordinator, I also took the initiative to visit other companies across the USA which were also utilizing lean. These visits provided great insight for me in understanding how companies adopt lean differently.
  • Alpine Home Medical Equipment
    Compliance And It Officer
Alpine Home Medical Equipment Jan 2005 - Dec 2011
    Salt Lake City
As the Compliance and IT Officer, I oversaw all aspects of information technology and the compliance program. I developed a software application which tracked and reported on each branches adherence to various standards. (JCAHO, CMS, HIPAA, etc...). We were audited by the Joint Commission on Healthcare Accreditation routinely. In my last audit in the role of compliance officer, the Joint Commission auditor requested that 2 of the methods I created for tracking and improving compliance be considered for use as "best practices" nationwide. In the information technology side of things, I really worked to streamline, automate, and make things work more efficiently for the staff. I worked on numerous projects, programming in VB.NET, C#, C++, SQL, T-SQL, PHP, and JavaScript. I also helped to serve as the part time MySQL and MS-SQL Server database administrator. The scope of these software projects varied greatly, but included the following major areas:*Extensive document imaging \ EMR system with OCR, Bar code Recognition, and automated work flow.*Enhanced document management systems which produced documents quickly and with few errors. *Business Intelligence\ ETL\ data mining solutions which provided timely and accurate reporting for management.*Tools for building and reading ANSI X12 4010 and 5010 transactions.*Compliance tracking, reporting and scoring software tools.Beyond the software side of things, I assisted our system administrator with basic networking, Windows Server Administration, and Citrix Xen Virtualization.
  • Alpine Home Medical Equipment

Alpine Home Medical Equipment Apr 2002 - Jun 2005

Using this, I built algorithms to learn and identify which accounts would take the least amount of effort, and yield the largest collections.*Automated many methods for electronic claims checking, correction, and resubmission.*Implemented Six-Sigma quality program that reduced the error rate during intake from ~30% to under 5%.*Oversaw coaching, management, for a team of 4-10 staff.*Broke numerous collection records, and won employee of the year award in 2003.
  • Utah Auto Auction
    Project Specialist
    Utah Auto Auction 2001 - 2002
    Woods Cross, Ut
This was a temporary position with the Utah Auto Auction. My main duty was to track vehicles being processed for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and account for these in an AS400 mainframe. I was quickly able to adopt a simple excel software solution to improve the existing process, and reduced errors dramatically. Following that, I interfaced this with an AS400 mainframe to streamline the data entry process, which reduce the data entry time by 90% I ended up finishing a 6 month project in just over 2 months.
  • Publicis
    Software Developer
    Publicis 1999 - 2001
    Greater Salt Lake City Area
Being a full-time software developer at Optimedia I got my real first-hand experience working on a development team. We built numerous software solutions in C++, VB6, and MS SQL Server. These solutions helped to track and report on advertising campaign performance. I received annual "Lion" award in 2001 for outstanding performance.
  • Jc Penney
    Detail Assistant / Team Lead
    Jc Penney 1997 - 1999
    Greater Salt Lake City Area
Working at J.C. Penney's was my first real opportunity to utilize my computer skills in a professional environment. I quickly learned how to utilized macros to improve my production. this allowed me to consistently led department in production by over 300+%.I was responsible for training new hires. To assist with this, I wrote a software application that mimicked the enterprise accounting & imaging software. This greatly reduced the amount of time required to train a new employee, as I could create "work" for them which would teach them the specifics of each scenario, rather than waiting for them to just "happen".Received 2 perfect attendance awards
