I was responsible for setting up a new type of embedded system, effectively a light-weight 'Digital Twin' of Vancouver General Hospital's HVAC & Refrigeration Gas Leak Detection systems. The system monitors the health and performance of HVAC systems as well as the condition of the rooms in which they are located. Our project is currently live at Vancouver General Hospital. Key Responsibilities:- Led the creation of an embedded system to gather, process, and analyze data from industrial environments (mechanical rooms) & HVAC equipment (motors) to ensure they are operating correctly and under safe conditions- Installed network throughout the hospital, ensuring continuous monitoring of all systems- Applied techniques to predict when equipment might fail so preventative maintenance may be scheduled before problems arise- Developed straightforward dashboards for monitoring the system in real-time, allowing the hospital's facilities team to make informed decisions about maintenance- (In Progress) Validating the reliability, accuracy, and security of the system through thorough testing, meeting high standards of a production quality product- Continuously improved the system by analyzing performance data and making adjustments to enhance its functionality. During the week I am mentoring elementary and high school students in preparation for robotics competition VEXIQ Rise Above. On the weekend, I help teach beginner-intermediate Python classes. Working with children aged 8-15 has taught me a lot about what it means to have patience, as well as how to let go and have fun. The hardest part of this position was resolving conflicts between students. I quickly realized kids can not always regulate their emotions. The hardest part of this position was resolving conflicts between students. I quickly realized kids can not always regulate their emotions. This lead to serious disagreements on one team before the Robotics World Championships. I immediately went to my coworker and asked for his help approaching the team. We found that the students were not listening to each other and this was building tension and frustration. Our solution was to teach them how to commit to listening, and not interrupt while a team mate is explaining. If they still could not resolve the situation, then the mentors would come in and facilitate why some designs may be preferable over others. My favorite part of this job is that I got to be goofy and laugh with the students. I always tried to design lessons based around their interests with the goal in mind to teach them the lesson deliverables. Show less

I suspect this is when my love for project management took root and I realized I have an affinity for big picture thinking and a talent for working with people in a team setting. One of my most memorable moments was presenting to Technical Safety BC and having to justify the engineering design to senior engineers.I was responsible for engaging a group of 10 engineering students remotely. On this team I come up with creative ways to keep the ideas flowing, such as turning complex tasks into fun coding challenges (like HackerRank). My favourite aspect of being on this team was being able to take on leadership roles and have the chance to challenge myself.I love to see the innovative solutions come alive from my members with their different expertise and backgrounds. I try to support the growth of my team by delegating tasks tailored to their career interests, which resulted in great member retention in 2020. Show less
